Boutte Betting on Games

This is what happens when you basically make Sports Betting Legal everywhere. And believe me, there is a lot of point shaving going on too. ESPN has their own Sports book!! (no conflict of interest??) So good luck with stopping the athletes from betting through their Friends/relatives. Pandora's box is OPEN. So everyone needs to just get over it; it is not going to change. My concern is the game integrity; when you have billions of dollars involved, you Will have Corruption. In conclusion; Pete Rose to the HOF---NOW! OR, Sportswriters, Announcers, Analysts, Support Staff, ect should be barred from betting on games; they have inside info.
How is ESPN owning a sportsbook a conflict of interest?

Welp, for you surface skimmers, IF you own a Sportsbook, and have a program called "Best Bets" and have commentators "suggesting" the winners on most of their weekly pregame coverage ; If you can't see that, go back to sleep.

That's just promotion/marketing. The interests of ESPN's sportsbook and its sports programming are totally aligned. Is it a conflict of interest for a golf course to have a pro on their staff that offers lessons?

A conflict of interest is a situation where 2 interests, well, are in conflict with one another. A guy working for a painting company that also directs would-be clients of his employer to his on-the-side painting business, for example.

You are using a term and have no idea what it actually means.

"You are using a term and I have no idea what it actually means". And that is exactly why you don't get it. How do you conflate Painting and Gambling? Funny as hell.

You are conflating "potentially seedy" with "conflict of interest." The interests of ESPN as a sportsbook and ESPN as a broadcaster of sporting events are perfectly aligned. The interests of one do not conflict at all with the other, like the example I gave of the painter.

You don't like ESPN owning a sportsbook, which is a perfectly legitimate opinion, but it isn't a conflict of interest. At all.

The conflict of interest isn't that they promote the gamlbkng.

It's that they are in a unique position to influence the bets they host, by choosing what and how to report. And their access and credibility are almost unrivaled. They could steer millions to the 49ers by deciding to focus on signs that Kelce and Mahomes are over the hill. Or distracted by their off field pursuits. Etc.

MOST everyone involved in Sports is betting.
Yep. Ads for gambling apps and websites are everywhere, but I'm just glad they got rid of the beer barrel trophy that used to symbolize a rivalry because...well....optics matter?

The Hypocrisy is asinine. Gambling is one of the 7 deadly sins, but yet; we are inundated with Sportsbooks , Handicappers, bad beats, AND Beer Commercials, BUT, hell no to the Beer Barrel Trophy. Stupid as W(H)ell. This is what you get when common sense is overwhelmed by AGENDA.

no it isn't.

Gambling itself isn't inherently wrong. its all about how people go about it in their lives that determines if its good or bad. plenty of good gambling.
what if you are gambling and all proceeds go to charity?
what if you are gambling just with chips and no actual money?
what if you go buy a weekly lotto ticket knowing the money goes to pay for college scholarships?

I have a question coming from ignorance. I do not gamble.

Anyway, how if a school is sponsored by a sports book? Are they getting too close to the envelope?
It wouldn't be a conflict of interest because the interests of the school and the interests of the sportsbook are not in conflict with each other. It can feel slimy, especially if you frown upon gambling, but it isn't a conflict of interest.

I'll go back to my previous example. ESPN owning a sportsbook is like a country club employing a golf pro. The club wants you to play golf there, and if you get lessons from their pro and get better, you are probably more likely to play at that course, buy stuff from the pro shop, eat at the clubhouse, get the family to join the pool, etc. It's good marketing and offering products that are related/complement each other. That doesn't feel slimy because we're just talking about playing golf.

ESPN wants you to place bets on their sportsbook. If you place bets on their sportsbook, you're probably more likely to watch sports, many of which their network televises. Or vice versa - if you watch sports on their network, you are probably more likely to place bets on their sportsbook. It's the exact same dynamic as the golf example, except gambling is seen as a vice by many and certainly can have an addictive quality to it, so it feels slimy. But it isn't a conflict of interest.

Rule #1. Money begats corruption; especially "easy money". If Alabama's baseball coach can pass on inside info to a big time gambler (Yep it happened with the most previously fired Coach) then who is to say ANY coach couldn't tell his Cronies "Don't take us this week". You betcha.
