Joker Phillips has unexpected vacancy on UK staff | CollegeFootballTalk.com

In addition to his assistant head-coach title, Ortmayer was also the tight ends coach and, more importantly, in charge of the Wildcats' special teams as that unit's coordinator. The Herald-Leader reports that a search for a replacement is expected to commence immediately.

Sounds like a pretty big hassle for the Cats.

No search needed, as it seems the replacement was known before the dismissal of Ortmayer. It is being reported already that Kentucky alum and current Illinois assistant Greg Nord will take his place.

This move obviously vaults UK into the preseason top 10. :)

A little bizarre isn't it, at this point in the off season? Especially with no explanation or reason...

Interested to see how the Wildcats play under Joker. Rich Brooks was a solid coach.

While I don't see a massive change in anything, there is a difference between Joker and Papaw on the recruiting side. Bringing in some pretty versatile players. We shall see what happens. I do think the playbook will be opened up a little bit, providing the talent is there to make it work.

UK didn't start winning under Brooks until he replaced Ron Hudson with Joker.

No, it's not bizarre at all. Phillips let Coach Ort finish up the fiscal year at UK to add to his retirement, and I betcha that bringing Nord on was his plan all along. It's a good hire for Kentucky. Nord has good recruiting ties and played at UK.

Ortmayer was a good old school coach, but blocked kicks cost us one against you guys a few years back.

That is the truth. Hudson was an idiot trying to run the option with a 315 pound quarterback.
