“I was never even there. As far as I am concerned. I never even was there. When a coach quits in the middle of the year and ruins a bunch of people’s families and doesn’t’ have enough guts to at least finish out the year. I am not a part of that.”

“He is a coward. Put that in quotes. He ruined a bunch of people’s lives, a bunch of people’s families, kids, because he didn’t have enough nuts to stay there and finish the job. That’s the truth.”

“No, most people in football have enough courage about them and enough fight to stick through something and not quit halfway through the year. It is cowardly.

He came in and said he resigned, he would talk to us all at a later date, walked out of the office and no one has ever talked to him since. Not that anybody wanted to.

“He’s a gutless bastard. Quote that. I don’t give a ****.”

When told that we might might not be able to use the B word, Zimmer went one better: “How about this, gutless MF. You can use that.”

I have always liked Zimmer but my goodness that man has earned my respect. He has long been overdue for a HC job in the NFL my opinion. I wouldn't want to piss him off.

It's interesting to see guys who numerous posters here called snakes, and were ripped for it, being exposed as the serpents they are. Eventually, the naive and clueless might catch on.

I get the sentiment and agree, but I just don't know how he ruined people's families?

"Ruined" is probably a little strong, but he moved a lot of people to Atlanta only to sneak away less than a year later without regard for any of the people he brought in.

I don't remember that . . . but I don't doubt it.

There were a few posters who brought up his name. May have been after Chris Low mentioned him as a candidate, though.

I think Petrino is overrated and deserves to be shredded for leaving Atlanta early, but what did he mean by 'runing kids lives?'

See post #9. It's one of those things that some people can relate to and some people couldn't care less about.

it should be painfully obvious.

you bring in a new staff to atlanta.
at least some, if not all, the staff members have a wife and kid(s).

as soon as petrino leaves, you think the entire staff is going to be kept on by whoever replaces petrino?

hell no. so pretty much everybody who relocated their whole family to atlanta was going to be stuck with no job... and then if/when they did find a job, it would mean having to uproot the family (AND KIDS) again.

not a really cool thing for kids to go through.

I have no info on this, but I do remember the interim coach who finished out the year was on the staff already as was the rest of the coaches who finished out the year.
I would imagine they are all employed somewhere and still coaching. So ruined is too strong a term. Were they screwed, yes.

I am in no way patting Petrino on the butt, what he did was gutless. but the real weasel was and is Vick and the real guy who took the fall was McKay who got to keep being president, but lost all his power. he could not get over the Vick and Petrino things combined.

At any rate, it worked out for Atlanta, right? they had to go through one year of horror and one year of rebuild, they are solid now.

dooley didn't ruin the louisiana tech kids lives?
Leaving after 3 years to take a better job is not even slightly comparable to moving coaches to a new city then 10 months later taking another job in secret and bailing out with no warning 3/4 of the way through the first season and not even having the decency to tell all the people they were going to lose their jobs because of him.

Yeah, but Petrino did buy them some cool T-shirts that said "FINISH", so I feel like it pretty much evens out.

Any problems with Kiffin leaving have far more to do with the fact that he basically screwed over our program than the fact that assistants may not have liked moving.
