I didn't know these existed until today. Does anyone have one or have experience with one. I haven't found one locally, yet, so I may have to order off the net. Just looking for info, recommendations and maybe a good website to order from. Have found multiple sites online but looking for someone who may have ordered online and could recommend one over the other.

YouTube - RC kite night flight

ADDED-05/17/2011

I edited the title to include planes. Seems like getting a decent kite was leading to the $400+ range. This morning I started looking at good entry level electric planes. So, now my focus is on this. Still looking into the kites, but looking for input on RC RTF planes around $150 or less.

I've wanted a plane in the past. Came close a few times. This might be a decent starting step.

Cheaper to crash land.

I thought it would be fun in the middle of the desert at night. One I'm looking at comes with LED lights. Afraid that during the day a hawk might take it down. Had an eagle pluck a bird off the ground in my backyard yesterday.

RC plane would be cooler

Yeah, but as JT said, cheaper to crash. Pretty sure I'll bring in to ground a few times unintentionally. Much cheaper startup, too. One of our engineers belonged to a club in San Berdoo and they used to fly at the old Norton Air Base. They had some expensive and large RC's.

My father in law has a (whatever scale) Hawker Hurricane...wingspan is easily 6'. It's F'ing awesome.

I think a RC kite would be ideal, kind of like an ultra lite before a cessna

I am not having much luck yet. Found one on a site that is sold out and requested an e-mail when in stock. Also, have e-mails out to local shops. Some of these can get expensive. I'm looking in the $125 or less range to get into it.

Never mind. I'm now reading and it's not complete for that price. Doesn't have the power unit installed. That's another $168.

I wonder about the power and the landing. I'm uncertain if they are a good trainer for planes or not.

I don't know. Maybe yes and no. If one can be found for $11-150, it would be a cheaper route to learner some basics. Plus, not much damage when crashed. Most everything I've considered has been $300+. Hell, you can get a trainer plane for less than that. Not sure of the quality, though. Haven't looked. Still looking though.

Anyway, I've never flown an RC plane but always thought the controls might be as touchy as a stick on a MIG, if you know what I mean. Very little room for error.

I have learned a new term. RTF=Ready To Fly. Anything else needs assembly and/or extra parts purchased.

I saw a few kites for $120 or so with 7-10 minutes air time. Seems a plane would be around that to start out.

I should ask father in law if they make any dummy weighted for a belly down landing.

Like we said before, sly, getting it airborne and flying probably isn't much, getting it down in one piece is different.

For the plane, yeah. The kites are so light that it seems you can get close to the ground flying slow, pull up slightly, stall and drop it. I don't know. Here's a cheap lightweight small plane that might be a decent trainer. Apparently, it's for indoors or outside w/ little to no wind. $129/free shipping/ready to go out of the box. Has lights for night flying to scare neighbors. No idea on the range. Video here.
