JONES on Worley running: "I'm going to hold a media clinic on the zone read. It's not always the zone read. Sometimes when it looks like the lane it open, the defensive end is making a play and it wasn't open when the decision was made."

RB's have to hit it harder if that's the case.

It looks like the backs are coached to get the ball, turn and run to the opposite way of the hand-off. Are they trying to catch flow going one way and the RB going the other way? Any experts :eek:lol: ?

That's actually a designed play without a keep option.

The ones I am talking about are the ones where a DE makes a play on the RB AFTER the QB correctly hands it off. If QB makes the right read and freezes the DE for just a half count then the RB has to get through the hole before he can recover... assuming there is a hole of course.

We as Tn fans have seen Worley pass up on some big running lanes. Its frustrating watching him pass up the chance to have big runs.

I think on more than 1 occasion the QB could have walked 5 yds. hardly ever does the de follow Worley

It just looks a little slow to me. Not "down hill"

Seems as if it does take a minute to develop. Wish they would just let our speed guys take off in one motion. The defense already is coming full speed and taking a side step for a run to develop with a young online seems like you wil get the 2-4 yrd runs we're averaging. I'm no coach and I'll leave those decisions up to him, but it does stump me a little.

The zone read is designed so that if every lineman can get to their man there should be a pretty good cutback lane open for the running back

Is he saying that sometimes the play has no run option, but it appears to? and other times the play does, but the DE is making a play when the read is made?

I am asking because I really don't understand what he is saying out of context without hearing it.

So is what Worley passed up an actual zone read or was it a hand off to the back? I've heard Butch say sometimes its just a hand off even though it looms like Worley should have kept it. I think they run it just get that one or two yards to keep the D honest personally. From what I understand you dont have to gain big yardage on those for the total scheme to be effective. Am I wrong here?

Then maybe, we stop running the read option since he hardly keeps the ball. We aren't fooling anyone at this point and it's just slowing down the development of the run play. By the time the RB's get to the line the hole is closed......

We must be playing against all American DEs every other week :). I was so excited with the play calling in the Utah State game, because we seemed to be moving away from this....but these last two games it was back in full force. Maybe in a year or two it will be a good play for us, but today...it's still not putting our players in the best position to succeed.

I think he IS saying that and a little more. CBJ politely told the journalists that they and fans can't tell the difference between the power UT runs and the read option. Implicit in the "READ" part of the option is that the QB is responsible for one defender. Many folks don't look to see if we have a hat on a hat...if we do then it's not a read option.

I was watching the game with a friend and I venture to say he was yelling for Worley to pull the ball 70% of the time. It was humorous for a while before becoming tedious.

Over at UT Sports, Mike Strange asked Worley about it in the posted interviews, folks should check that out.

GBO!!!

I hope he isn't playing the "You don't understand" card. There are plenty of people watching UT football that know these types of offenses very well and can point out the flaws. This isn't exactly rocket science.

I didn't take it that way.

Were we averaging more than 2-3ypc, then nobody would care the JW only occasionally keeps it. Fans just tired of watching Hurd & Lane run right into that briar patch every time.

True. But there are many more that just don't understand.
