Andy Lopez Retiring After 33 Years

It wasn't a mistake.

Andy Lopez, who I do like (he's a good man), is the anti-Mike Martin.

In 33 years, his teams made 5 college world series. He just happened to get the big prize on two of those five occasions.

He only made a super regional 3 times in his 14 years at Arizona. His teams did not participate in the NCAA tournament 6 of his 14 years at Arizona. Only one Pac 12 title and that was split.

His resume isn't really all that great.

But, those NCAA titles sure look nice.

For it to be a mistake for Florida to have fired him, Florida would have to be worse off as a result.

Since Lopez was fired....

Florida has 4 sec titles, 4 college World Series appearances, and failed to participate in a regional twice.

Arizona has 1 conference title, 2 CWS appearances, and failed to participate in NCAA play 6 times. They were only above .500 in Pac 12 play in 5 of his seasons there

It's not close. The only thing that makes this an argument is Arizona got themselves a national title in the crapshoot that is the baseball tournament on one of the two occasions they got to the CWS. That's great and all.

But, the overall body of work is not that impressive. Sorry.

and this season isn't over for Florida

Florida is clearly better off.

Lopez just couldn't be consistent enough to be successful at a rate in sec to stick around.
