It would be naive to think Butch Jones was the only FBS head coach to receive “courtesy calls” from his local police department any time his players and the boys in blue crossed paths. However, so many Tennessee players have gotten in trouble lately that Jones’ courtesy call privilege came to light to the general public. Knox County prosecutors have been against the move, for obvious reasons, and on Friday Knoxville police chief David Rausch revealed he has ended the practice.

"So many Tennessee player have gotten in trouble recently"

I wasn't aware we had players getting in trouble right-and-left

This has been going on in Knoxville since the 60's at least. It is common practice at most big time schools and a lot of small schools.

it won't stop. Word will get to the HC quickly when someone has an issue. they have to say something like this

So, in other words, KPD will call UTPD rather than calling Jones. Then, they will call Butch.

No problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't CBJ almost immediately suspend the players? Second question, isn't the DA for Knoxville a woman? Wouldn't you think she would be raising Hell and half of Tennessee if she thought a rape accusation was being deflected in any way?

The police should be helping out UT when players get in trouble and call the AD and Butch to ward off trouble first!

They'll figure out a way around this. Knoxville PD can just easily relay a message to someone who in turn can relay a message to Coach Jones. This is such bull****.

Right there in the article is says they will contact the UT PD. And if someone doesn't think the next call is going out to CBJ, they are an idiot.

As the old saying goes, there's more than one way to skin a cat.

Not sure how this stuff was working in Knoxville, other than to suggest the honeymoon is definitely over.

Once upon a time, most alleged misdemeanors would be handled with a courtesy call. Some police authorities are still comfortable working with the coaches when the stakes are much higher. (See Jamis Winston).

Butch will need to study a lot harder on public relations.
