Every conference has a Seton Hall: the consistent top-half finisher waiting for its turn to break out and serve time as the leader of the pack. Under Head coach Rob Sheppard, son of current Head coach Emeritus Mike Sheppard, the Pirates have reached the Big East tournament six years in a row while maintaining a record of .500 or more in each of those years. No surprise then that they are expected to do just that in 2017.
Jr. Shane McCarthy (6-4, 2.38) has had an impressive run in his first two seasons as a Pirate. The righthander, who has lead the Big East in ERA two consecutive years, looks to turn in yet another dominate stat line and lead the Pirates to the top of the conference. He will be accompanied atop the rotation by So. Cullen Dana (7-2, 2,75), a 6-foot-5 southpaw with loads of upside. Should these two perform similar to how they did in 2016, the Pirates will have a solid chance of making a run come tournament time in May. Their experienced bullpen and solid defense will only further guide them toward a regional appearance. Any challenges in reaching regionals will lie in replacing the top half of the lineup.
The Pirates lose their 1-2-3 batters in Derek Jenkins, Zach Weigel and Chris Chiaradio. This trio accounted for over 100 stolen bases in 2016 and as such will be difficult to replace. Nonetheless, speed will remain a strength of this ball club. Sheppard has the pleasure of returning three double-digit base stealers in Mike Alescio (.310/.367/.418), Ryan Ramiz and Joe Poduslenko, as well as Sr. outfielder Jackson Martin who recorded 6 steals with very limited action in 2016.
