Synopsis:

While it looks bad, especially when you take last weeks games against Ole Miss and A&M into consideration, a few nuggets to keep in mind:

1) Butch Jones is 7-4 overall at Neyland Stadium with an average score of 31-19

2) Butch Jones is 1-2 overall against ranked opponents at Neyland Stadium with an average score of 26-37. That was against an opponent average rank of 8th.

3) 2014 Tennessee is 3-1 at home with an average score of 32-12.

4) 2014 Bama is 2-1 on the road with an average score of 21-20. They are 4-0 at home with an average score of 49-8. They are not the same team on the road.

So my 12 keys to victory is

Tennessee Offense
1) Quick passes on 1st down (screens to the WR and RB)
2) Minimize the negative plays (NO TRICK PLAYS)
3) Stretch the field (make them respect the deep ball)
4) Win the 1 on 1 battles (WR size advantage)

Tennessee Defense
1) Minimize the run on 1st downs
2) Minimize Cooper
3) Contain Simms in the pocket, make him a real QB
4) Win the battle on 3rd down

Tennessee Special Teams
1) Win the field position battle

Extras
1) Win the turnover battle
2) Avoid drive killing penalties
3) Keep the crowd in the game

Like I said it looks bad but stranger things have happened, any Vols fan can attest to that GO VOLS!!!!!!!

Good post, I bet our team plays better this game than we think.

Perhaps it would be better to just take baby steps like maybe score a touchdown against a FBS team? Now counting at 8 quarters.

I agree with everything you said except the screens. We seem to make it so obvious that a screen is coming every time. I wouldn't completely take it out of the playbook but I would like to see more traditional routes like a slant when the middle is wide open all day

When I said screens, I meant more screens to the backs. Also would like to see more of the read option backside pass. Come to think of it, I would really like to see some Wild Pig with Hurd with Pig in the backfield and Person as the motion.

Good numbers and good comments. I am afraid it is too late to salvage this year. Maybe next year we will do better.

it would be good if we could score more than 17 points against Alabama. Haven't done that since 2003

Well there is a reason they say, "Any given Saturday." That is why you play the game. At some point....all the bad and odd things that always happens to us in a game has to flip the script in our favor.

BS, a win over Bama almost certainly seals a 7-5 in my mind, with spurriers weird mind being the difference between 8-4 and 7-5 compared to the 7-5 vs 6-6 otherwise which is what Freeze got on year 2 and is everyone's stupid comparison.

We just need to avoid negative plays and no gains. Get some some first downs, EXTEND some drives and our Defense will do the rest.

Hell If we could get some ball control offense play 3 and out Defense use the clock like one coach did one year when a Fg was blocked to win a game we can be in this game..

Good post, I bet our team plays better this game than we think.

I've seen nothing in the first seven games this season to make me think that this offense is going to improve enough before Saturday to even keep this game competitive.
