I am hoping 17-15 would allow for us to get into the NIT but do not be shocked at all if we still did not make it in. I was able to bring up around 5 or so NIT bracketology type sites and only one had us in and only one more had us as one of the few teams still with a shot to slide in. The 3 others did not mention the Vols at all, so I just want people to wrap their heads around the fact we are far from a lock even if we were to win 3 straight SEC games down the stretch which is quite an accomplishment for this team.

Ok, now that the PSA is done...lets talk about NIT Results for our VOLS. We have been to 13 NIT's, with an overall record of 13-13 in them. OUCH!!! Here are the year by year results.

while doing research the 1990 and 1985 tournaments stuck out...in 1990 to beat Memphis and to lose to Vandy must have been a rollercoaster ride, Vandy won that NIT...in 1985 the Final Four was UT, Louisville, Indiana, and UCLA..just remember UL won the Big Dance in 1986 and IU in 1987...thats one heck of final four to be apart of even if its in the NIT

I'm confused, in 85 did we win the NIT or what? The OP's post shows us winning all of our games in the NIT that year, but says "consolation" next to our last game vs. Louisville.

sorry lost to IU in semi's obviously...hard to win one when you have 13 losses in 13 appearances...lol...it is now fixed

I believe there was a Wade Houston coached NIT game against Vandy that was a 40 point loss.

Coach Donnie Tyndall will never let that happen again.

not sure if Wade lost a game to Vandy by 40 in the regular season...but the 1990 in the NIT we only lost by 4 to Vandy...there is definitely not a 40 point loss to Vandy in the NIT on our resume..thank goodness

Another tidbit of info is that going back to that 2nd NIT appearance in 1969, every VOL coach has taken the team to the NIT except two. Those two exceptions are Jerry Green and Bruce Pearl who coached the team for 9 total years and took us to the Big Dance all 9 years. Those two have combined to take us dancing almost half of our 20 appearances. WOW!!!

edit...Pearl coached 6...those two took us to half of our total appearances...was a late night...my years became confused...lol

Should be 10 trips to the NCAA tournament in 10 years. Green coached for 4 years, Pearl for 6.

yep...my bad...that means the two of those combined for half of our total appearances...says alot...this is also the first year Bruce will not finish above .500 in his entire career...needless to say Auburn is not the job UT is...HAHAHA...GO VOLS

You have to remember the tourneys have changed drastically over the years. Going to the NCAA or NIT up until around the mid to late 70s was very rare except for the elite teams. At one time the NIT was considered a better tournament than the NCAA

I believe the NIT has a policy that it automatically takes a regular season conference champion that loses in its conference tournament. So, if we want to make it in, we need regular season champs to also win their tournament. That is interesting because teams on the bubble for the NCAAT also want most of the conference champs to win as well for fear of the regular season champ stealing an at-large bid.

Some teams actually played in both. In 1950, City College of NY won both, and beat Bradley in both finals.

UT has historically played ho hum BB in the NIT. The motivation to win is usually not very strong. If we make it this year I hope Donnie can get the team fired up like it was vs LSU the other night so we can make it to MSG. The extra reps and tourney experience will help the young players.

I think the BasketVols finish 17-15 and go to the NIT. I think they will probably have to play Old Dominion on the road in the 1st round.

So IF we go to the NIT, and IF we win, then we are in the same league with MTSU, Mercer, and Sav State. This year I will take the "glass half full" perspective and catagorize the Vols as Overachievers Fast forward 1 year and I will have another word. GBO

Why would we be in the "same league" as those teams?

Things have changed with the level of talented teams as well.....NIT teams now can be REALLY good teams....use too...they were the weak left overs....speaks to parity...IMO
