Jack Jones moving to guard?
B.J. Oliver @_CoachOliver
Quick prayer for my little bro @jackjoneshii on his 1st day of camp practice. New position playing guard here we come #BloodGang #OLP
12:56 PM - 4 Aug 2015

RUCKER RAPID REVIEW
-First practice was crisp
-No Von
-Quay Picou was on the sideline. May be cleared as soon as Wednesday.
-Richmond 2nd team RT, Jack Jones 2nd team RG, Chance hall T, Boulware RT, Thomas C, Mosley G.
-First team OL Kyler Kerbyson at LT, Marcus Jackson at LG, Mack Crowder at C, Jashon Robertson at RG and Brett Kendrick at RT.
-Bynum was first team MLB and Colton Jumper was second team.
-Martin and Sapp stood out from athleticism standpoint.
-You could tell McKenzie arrived in July and Tuttle had been here since January.

Freshman quarterback Sheriron Jones has an incredibly quick release, and that really stood out in quarterback drills. That’s not to suggest he looks more polished than fellow freshman Quinten Dormady, because Dormady throws a great ball. … Not surprisingly, freshman quarterback-turned-receiver Jauan Jennings looked like he was going through his first college practice as a wideout, and he got plenty of extra pointers from receivers coach Zach Azzanni. … Martin also got some work with the return specialists, as did sophomore running back Alvin Kamara in addition to the usual suspects. … The Nike practice gear looks very good. …

VQ QUICK HITS
In early work with skill players fielding punts, Alvin Kamara, Pig Howard, Justin Martin, Ralph Abernathy IV, Cam Sutton, Josh Smith and Josh Malone got reps.

Steve Stripling had by his largest collection of defensive linemen to work with, even as Andrew Butcher and LaTroy Lewis looked on in shorts and tees.

In fact, it was in that setting that Butch Jones grew tired of a couple errant tosses in interception drills by a student worker and loosened up his arm, firing several passes in the drills and putting a little extra zip on a pass to Justin Martin.

The quarterbacks didn't do a lot tonight during open sessions on the field but Sheriron Jones was a bit of a nice surprise. He threw the ball really well and showed the kind of mobility and fluidity that you'd expect to see based on his high school tape. Quinten Dormady obviously has a leg up on the backup job after being here in the spring but with Jones the Vols could have a couple of promising prospects under center for the future.

NEW NIKE PRACTICE JERSEYS

...Mosley participated in the first practice of the preseason on Monday.

Guard Austin Sanders participated in practice with a cast around his right hand. Jones said Monday that Sanders would be limited in practice.

As Jones said they would, freshman Jauan Jennings began practice at wide receiver and defensive back Malik Foreman started at defensive back. Jennings dropped one pass during the pat-and-go drill, an exercise early in practice in which receivers run routes and catch passes without a defense, but otherwise was solid.

PLAYER/COACH QUOTES FROM UT
KERBYSON: It's kind of bittersweet. It's my last first day.
KERBYSON: Coach Jones reminds us "you have a target on your back, you better be ready."
KERBYSON: Competition always makes you better. When I was younger, I always though competition made the older guys better
KERBYSON: I love the fact that we have a 240 pound RB. As long as he doesn't run into me in the back, it's cool

CLm27T7UkAAXuxY.jpg:small

DOBBS: We didn't want to use Day 1 as an excuse to come out slow. So everyone brought a lot of energy.

CLm3sUUWIAAJBXt.jpg:small

SUTTON: It's amazing to get back out on the field. You can never take a single day for granted.

JONES: I liked their intensity, I liked their effort. I wanted to see our retention from the classroom to the practice field.
JONES: We still have to get much better on some little nuances: our hustle, our tempo. But I thought it was improved from the spring.
JONES: We talk about getting 1% better and I thought we were able to get 1% better today.
JONES: @qdormady (Quinten Dormady) did a great job coming out, you can see the command presence. I thought he did some really, really good things.
JONES: The first glaring difference (from last year) is our team speed, particularly in the backfield. The overall maturation has improved.
JONES: @CamSutton23 with a great leadership opportunity today, calling the 2nd team defense back to sidelines after it failed to hustle.
JONES: We'll have to manage @dbarnett25 & @CurtMaggitt because they only know one speed: full speed. It's a long camp.
JONES: The element of competition was what I wanted to see. But even with competition, they are helping each other, coaching each other.

JONES: I was really encouraged by all of our freshmen.
JONES: Austin Smith could grow into a hybrid linebacker/defensive end like @CurtMaggitt.
JONES: It's great to have healthy bodies on the field, especially from a leadership perspective.

CLm74hjUkAAt_vM.jpg:small

MAGGITT: It was a real good day. I think we're a little further along in our install than we expected to be.
MAGGITT: You want to go fast and do your assignment, but you've also got to be smart (from a physical standpoint). It's tough.

BARNETT: I'm not nervous anymore. This year I feel more confident
BARNETT: I've got more pass rush moves. I'm stronger too.
BARNETT: I'm excited to see what he does this fall. Khalil is doing good things.
BARNETT: I just love football. When I'm on the field, I just love flying around hitting.
BARNETT: I've gotten more vocal while I'm out there on the field
