Butch's Memphis Recruiting

Memphis is always in a good recruiting cycle and Tennessee isn't really the "home team" in that town. Ole Miss is closer than Knoxville.

Bingo. Ole Miss, Mississippi St., Arkansas, and Bama. All have a stronger hold on Memphis than we do. As a matter of fact, Memphis is barely in the state.

Memphis has a huge Tennessee following. But like Dooley, Jones isn't paying attention. He is a liar worse than Dooley about the fence building. And the coaching is actually better again so expect to see more talent out of this area again. Just not headed to Knoxville.

Memphis has always had a huge Tennessee following; from the casual fan. Doesn't mean that we have recruiting connections there. And yeah, it falls on Butch to get in there but let's not pretend that Memphis has always been in our back pocket.

My take, Memphis has just as many UT fans as any other team, it is hit or miss with the players. I remember Germantown being a big contributor for OL and DL during the Fulmer era.

Memphis is Tennessee's Prep Capital of 2016

Can any of you fellow VN folks who like to focus on recruiting give me an update on what, if any, strides Butch is making in Memphis in terms of recruiting? Looks like Memphis is in a good football cycle right now. GBO. :hi:

Solid teams in Memphis this year; however, the top talent is in Nashville and will be there for the foreseeable future. Plus, Butch has proven he can go into Memphis and get a recruit (Drew Richmond).

Memphis will never be a TN lockdown place. We have this question everytime a new coach comes along. The new coach says it will be a focus then tries and for whatever reason decides it's not worth a ton of time. It's a mixture of too much trouble with handlers, HS coaches there with a sense of entitlement that you owe them something, bad academics and it's just not as good as it used to be football talent.

It is closer to Miss and Arky. Always going to be a battle there

Every player in the state doesn't necessarily meet the criteria that CBJ is looking for. Regardless of the talent level, they have to able to fit the mold of what he thinks a Vol should be. Talent, coach-ability, attitude, interest in the program are just a few attributes that go into the evaluation of players. CBJ recruits the Memphis area well, just like the Nashville and Knoxville areas. He does need to get in there and fight for the top talent, and he's done that with Smith.

The top tier recruits from Memphis area are Smith, Richardson from Trezevant, and Miller from Whitehaven. We'll get Smith, Richardson has no interest, and Miller is shorter than 6'0'', and committed to Mizzou. We got Bumphus from out that way, but just as every state, we can't keep them all home.

Yep, Memphis dominated the state championship games so there's abundant talent in West Tennessee.

Butch is aware of the talent worth recruiting in Memphis. You're just being silly if you don't think he is.

...being aware and getting it are two different things...UT should be recruiting Memphis as hard as any other Metro City in Tennessee...the history of UT recruiting Memphis goes back a lot further than Butch Jones...UT has never been as successful as the surrounding states in recruiting Memphis...that's my story and I'm sticking to it......:)

GO VOLS...BEAT HUSKERS!

Wouldn't call Smith from the "Memphis area" at all. Jackson is a solid 1.5 hours East of Memphis and isn't subjected to the same type "politics" seen in Shelby County. Different place altogether.

This isn't true. The Memphis Media wants you to think that its a Memphis town, but its a pretty even split between OM, UT, and Memphis. But there are literally fans of pretty much every team in the SEC. Bama, Miss. St., and Arky are probably in the second level of fans in Memphis but I have seen Auburn, LSU, Georgia, and Florida fans as well. I've lived here for almost 30 years now and there are PLENTY of UT fans. It seems that there is a large concentration of UT fans in the suburb of Bartlett while Collierville and Germantown have a lot of OM fans. Teams like Whitehaven, East, White Station, Ridgeway, as well as a few of the private schools like CBHS, Briarcrest, MUS, and ECS, all produce high D-1 talent. But the area is pretty evenly divided and it has always seemed like Tennessee is more interested in VA and NC recruits that recruits in Memphis. But perhaps with the added competition from Fuente and Muschamp (Plus Dabo) in the Va/NC/SC region, Butch will focus more on Memphis. There is always plenty of talent here.

If you were talking about the amount of commits when you said that State, Bama, and Arky, "Have a stronger hold" than we do, then you are correct. But as far as fans go, there are as many of us here as any other fanbase.
