Notes

During practice, the WRs worked on beating press coverage and Tyler Byrd jammed Callaway and then yelled, "I told y'all I'm a 1st round DB!"

Jarrett Guarantano was back on the field with the quarterbacks today after missing the Vols’ open practice on Friday. He was reportedly back with the team on Saturday, but this was the first time we got to see him back after his absence due to a death in the family.

All of Tennessee’s offensive linemen who had been held out were back in full pads and not in non-contact jerseys for today’s practice. T
Jonathan Kongbo went through the Circle of Life drill to start practice after stretches, and the drill really fired up the team. They broke out into a chant at the conclusion of the drill and before they headed off to individual drills.

..Tyler Byrd really stood out from a route running and awareness standpoint.

Freshman Josh Palmer has been one of the big stories of fall camp, and he continues to impress. He will still, at times, try to get a little fancy instead of moving up field like he should, but all in all he has very solid attributes that should earn him a good amount of playing time at receiver this fall.

The Vols’ safeties might be the strongest part of the defense. ... Todd Kelly Jr. is a consistent force back there, but Nigel Warrior continues to impress with his athleticism and instincts, and Micah Abernathy won’t let himself be forgotten in the battle for playing time either.

Practice started with a faux ‘Circle of Life’ drill, with Butch Jones getting on the microphone and calling out Jonathan Kongbo and tight end Eli Wolf — only to stop the drill and award Wolf, a redshirt sophomore and the younger brother of Ethan Wolf, a scholarship. The team then went crazy and started chanting “Eli! Eli! Eli”

Perhaps the biggest observation Tuesday was nickel-back Rashaan Gaulden worked with the corners during position work

Wideout Marquez Callaway remains the frontrunner for the No. 1 returner job. During one drill,

A scout from the Carolina Panthers was at practice Tuesday.

Byrd ran routes with the slot receivers Tuesday. While Jauan Jennings, Callaway and Joshua Palmer were the outside receivers on one side, with Brandon Johnson and others on the outside on the opposite boundary. Josh Smith continues to look really smooth as the No. 1 slot WR.

Not a single pass hit turf in the final three skeleton routes, drawing the praise of OC Larry Scott.

Offensive lineman Jack Jones saw increased work at center during Tuesday's practice.
Jones, the junior from Murfreesboro, has been embroiled in a tight battle for the starting spot at left guard, but he worked almost exclusively at center during the early portions of practice. He was snapping with the quarterbacks, alongside redshirt freshman Ryan Johnson and freshman Riley Locklear. Jones also was at center during individual drills.

Tennessee’s passing game looked pretty sharp Tuesday, especially considering the sweltering heat and humidity on Haslam Field.

Some of the freshmen getting looks for the punt team included Maleik Gray, Theo Jackson, Shawn Shamburger, Cheyenne Labruzza, Shanon Reid and Jordan Murphy, a wide receiver.

The five players catching punts earlier in practice were Jackson, Josh Smith, Marquez Callaway, Justin Martin, Emmanuel Moseley and Jauan Jennings.

The group of players fielding kickoffs on Tuesday included Shamburger, Nigel Warrior, Latrell Williams, Micah Abernathy, Tyler Byrd and Ty Chandler.

The backs also caught some passes from the quarterbacks on Tuesday, and all three freshmen -- Coleman, Chandler and Tim Jordan -- looked like natural pass-catchers and they easily plucked the short passes out of the area without really breaking stride. It was a different story for Carlin Fils-aime. The sophomore double-caught one pass and had another go right through his hands, much to Gillespie's ire.
Sophomore receiver Brandon Johnson, junior Jauan Jennings and redshirt freshman Latrell Williams were among the receivers who used their quickness to get around opposing “defenders.”

Moseley and defensive tackle Quay Picou remain in green non-contact jerseys.

It's warranted, imo.

Makes for an interesting discussion...I thought he would make for a better CB coming out of HS...but I think one of the main selling points for him coming to TN (besides CFA) was playing offense.

He might be the best athlete on the team, so he's going to see the field regardless... Just glad he's here!

Just going off the clips from practice, Josh Palmer looks like our most talented WR and Nigel Warrior looks like our most talented S.

I expect a huge freshmen year from Josh Palmer. He looks ready to contribute.

I think Brandon Johnson or Callaway may be the most talented WR just my opinion though.

Speed and size on Palmer just looks different from everyone else. I like Callaway but he looks like he's plodding when he's running. And Brandon Johnson is more smooth than explosive.

Palmer just looks explosive. Something we haven't had on the outside in a long time.

So more a talented than #15 and #10? Seriously?

FWIW, Jennings is one of the most talented WR's to pass through UT in a while... and mostly because of nuances I doubt you have any ability to understand.

i love watching Jennings against the guys trying to "block" him. I know they aren't really engaging him but just how easy and natural his stiff arm is, is always fun to see.

This quote was telling to me. I hate it for the kid but I think he was recruited over. Hope he finds a spot somewhere on the team.
