YouTube - Jake Heaps 2008

We're currently in his top 10 list of schools, he will be visiting some time in February. His next step will be to announce his top 5, which I believe will look something like this (random order):

BYU
Tennessee
UW
Notre Dame

last spot will probably be UNC or UCLA.

A few notes:

-He's going to make his decision before his senior year begins, and most likely going to enroll early, and being a Morman, there is a possibility that he could take a 1-2 year mission.

-He hasn't visited yet, doesn't really have any connections to the school, and Tennessee is on his top 10. That means he really likes the coaching staff, so they just need to sell the school at this point IMO. The visit will be extremely important.

-Two of the big players will be UW and BYU, being the schools representing his home town and religion. He has shown a lot of interest in both of them. But if he was really sold on either of these schools, he would have announced his decision already, because one of his biggest priorities is to announce early and start recruiting players himself to go with him. These two are in the lead right now, but still a ways to go.

He'll go to BYU. Just a hunch, but I have many Mormon friends and the pull to go to school their is ridiculous if you're a Mormon.

All Kiffin needs to do is convince the kid that Knoxville sells the best magic underwear. :moon2: :w00t:

While growing up, he was tutored by the same quarterbacks coach as Erik Ainge. He was also in talks with David Reaves while he was at South Carolina, before joining Kiffin on this staff. We do have limited ties and relationships.

Lane has made a big impression on him and I think Lane's resume at USC and his attitude/temperament is perfectly suited to a competitor like Heaps. They may be a perfect pairing in terms of desire and ambition. I think that could be a huge factor. Lane and Heaps both want to win and neither seems to think he can be denied.

TN offers a huge fanbase/ best stadium in the country / top-shelf facilities / ability to compete as an underclassman / best conference in the nation

He's going to visit Feb. 15-17 with his parents on an unofficial visit.

I get the feeling that Jake may want to mix things up and go someplace where he doesn't have the level of comfort he'd have at BYU---where everyone is grounded in a similar background.

I've also wondered---as competitive as he is, I've started thinking his desire to compete may be too much for him to take a break at this point in his development.

Steve Young went to BYU and to this day hasn't taken a mission trip based on all reports I've gathered. I believe Steve is the great-great-great grandson of Brigham Young and if he didn't take one, I could see Jake trying to support the church in other ways.

Norm Chow is big and so is RN, but I don't see Heaps at UCLA. They seem destined to be second billing to USC for a long time. Heaps won't ever be the star at UCLA, which he could be outside of the shadow USC casts in that city.

Notre Dame is loaded at QB and wants to redshirt guys to distance their respective quarterbacks. They also aren't everybody's father's ND. They're a new Notre Dame that lost Syracuse, which finished 3-9 on the year.

I don't see that either, despite Weiss' pro ties.

UW is very unlikely to compete for a Pac-10 title and despite childhood loyalties, their talent level and expectations may not be suited to a top-5 signee. Top-5 guys seem to be less bothered by distance than other recruits. The best players go to the best places and UW isn't going to be one of those places in a short time.

UNC has been recruiting him very hard, but I don't see arguably the best pro-style QB in the country playing in the ACC. I don't see heaps in powder blue, despite the staff. My brain just can't put that on the mental projection screen.

Heaps to Patterson...give him six.
Heaps to Brown...touchdown Tennessee.
Heaps to Williams...yes sir, touchdown Tennessee.

those are things that make sense in my head.

and for anyone who says we aren't getting Patrick Patterson, who says I don't know something about a 2010/2011/2012 Patterson...hmmm?

I would Love for Jake Heaps to be a VOL....I realize my post is not of any significance...but he is way better than N. Montana IMO....be a hero Jake...we got nobody else...come in and redshirt....and then be prepared to be a 3/4 yr. starter....

As awesome as it would be to have him here, if we picked him up, we'd need to pick up someone else for those 2 years he is on his mission, since we didn't pick up a QB this year. And another kid might not like the idea of coming in to play essentially the two years he is gone.

I think if he does plan on a mission, he has UW written all over him with Sarkisian there (who was a QB at BYU under LaVelle Edwards and Norm Chow) and his girlfriend in the area, it might allow an easier transition.

He is from Skyline, WA...not too far from where I live. He is a stud, EVERYONE is gonna want him. It would be awesome if we got him, but the competition is gonna be tough.

Do you think him taking a 2 year Mormon mission after his first year will be a big deal in his recruitment?

yeah, that definatly could be a red flag. but I still think Kiffin will go after Heaps hard. he's the best the QB in next year's class but some reports are that he hasn't been performing that well at recent camps
