Who do you think the Top 10 "Elite" college hoops coaches are right now? Consider Xs and Os, game-time decisions, motivating players, recruiting, and overall marketing the team.

I want to put CBP on this, but he's not there yet.

(In no order)

Billy Donovan
Tom Izzo
Bob Knight
Roy Williams
John Thompson III
Billy Gillespie
Bill Self
Ben Howland
Rick Pitino

John Thompson III doesn't belong on that list just yet, and neither does Billy Gillespie. Bill Self and Ben Howland are arguable, but I think their inclusion is also premature.

Jim Calhoun should be on there, and I would list Boeheim before any of the four I mentioned. Gary Williams, John Calipari, and Lout Olsen should be in consideration as well.

Based on your criteria, I suppose...but going by the usual connotation of "elite" coaches, like based on accomplishments, titles, and just strictly household-name worth, I wouldn't consider him elite after 2 years of mild success.

you think Dean Smith should be on that list too? 20 years ago doesn't mean anything today.

Well Dean Smith won a title in '93 so I would say that is still means something. Also when they won it in '82 he was coaching Jordan, Worthy, Sam Perkins, Matt Doherty and um... Buzz Peterson. He was also coaching against John Topmson and Pat Ewing so I would say that means a whole lot.

So John Wooden's titles don't mean anything because they are in the past?

Sorry but that is a dumb statement to say something that is 20 years old doesn't matter today.

were talking about current coaches no? Is bobby knight CURRENTLY one of the top 10 coaches in the country? his last 3 years results would say otherwise. my point was that dean smith who is retired is as relavant as bobby knight who is stuck in texas tech.

you guys don't have lute olson on that list either.

3 years ago, I'd put Boeheim, Calhoun, Olsen and Williams on there. But I think other, younger coaches are quickly pushing them out. I left Knight on b/c he continues to perform, even with a school that has nowhere near the same basketball tradition as the four above.

If we have a Kansas, A&M and GTown Final 4, do you reconsider?

Calipari is about where Howland and Self are, IMO.

But, any coach can have a short stint of success. I think it makes much more sense to look what a coach has done for the past decade at least when deciding whether to include them on the list.

If you are saying who are the 10 best coaches in the country, then Bobby Knight's name is on that list. You are discrediting his coaching ability based on what he has done at Texas Tech? Are you kidding me? He has had good success considering the school he is at.

I just put Lute on my list, but yea it is current however to say something that happened 20 years doesn't matter today is just dumb.

I don't think Knight when from being a great coach to somehow not being good anymore. Now I do agree he is stuck at Tech and won't be as relevant as he would have been at Indiana.

By your logic, a coach that wins today is great, but loses tomorrow sucks. No way you can discredit what he has done for the past few years. The query was coaching now, not coaching now and considering the record for the past three years only.:hi:

what has bobby knight won in the last decade? his last 10 teams at indiana weren't exactly elite either.

Didn't make it clear enough apparently.

Yes - it's current coaches, and it has less to do with past accomplishments and more to do with who the best overall coaches are right now at the elite level - so no D-II, etc.

You're right on 1 thing about Knight - he's "stuck" at Texas Tech, where he's still beating quality teams like #1 seed Kansas and #3 seed A&M (twice) and making the NCAA Tourney (Calhoun? Boeheim? Bueller?).

I guess you could say with Knight his pride has gotten in the way of his recruiting. He won't recruit the type of kids a coach needs now days to win. If he had the talent of some elite programs he would would win a n.c. He didn't all of a sudden lose his coaching ability, but to a certain degree a coach is only as good as his players and he just doesn't have the horses other teams have.

that's my point. he may be a good coach, but he isn't elite. Elite coaches have a CHANCE at a final four EVERY season.

Good point, and I've got an opinion on what 1-and-done players are doing to college hoops, but I'll share that in a separate thread on the subject. So even handicapping his teams' talent, Knight still produces. For what a coach can do, he's still one of the best, IMO. And I don't even like the guy.

the list of "elite" coaches is rather small in my opinion....and to get on the list, you have to start with guys that have national titles....

Izzo
Pitino
K
Roy
Knight
Jim B
Calhoun
Donovan

that's my list of "elite" coaches right now.....and as a casual bball fan, those are the names that immediately jump out to me.....obviously for some closer to the game that have followed it a lot closer than me may have a different list......but to the general observer....these are the names that everyone knows about.
