Brain regions responsible for optimism located | Science | Reuters

"Humans expect positive events in the future even when there is no evidence to support such expectations," the researchers wrote in the journal Nature.

"For example, people expect to live longer and be healthier than average, they underestimate their likelihood of getting a divorce, and overestimate their prospects for success on the job market," they wrote.

Phelps said the researchers had a hard time getting the volunteers to think of purely neutral events in the future.

I would say the closest thing this Volunteer can think of as a "neutral event" (mediocrity) would be if we finish 8-4. :frown:

Well, a lot of fans did use the UT vs GA game to build expectations for the Vols. One (1) game!

I have seen 3 games in person: vs Southern Miss, vs Ark St, and vs Georgia. Just analyzing those games I see remarkable improvement from game-to-game.

Then I analyze the road game separately: vs Cal, vs Florida, vs Miss State, and vs Alabama. The Vols played about the same in all 4 games. The competition in the Miss State was not as good and thus the Vols comeback was successful.

Not using psychology, but statistics, I come up with a very probable outcome of 4 straight wins for the Vols. Home-field advantage means something to gamblers and I think it means something as far as real world results.

8-4 is the probable result for the regular season based upon the current situation. However, my opinion may change after the next 4 games. Kentucky has games @Vandy and @Georgia just prior to its meeting with the Vols. I see 2 teams with identical 8-3 records playing. The Vols will be playing for a trip to the SECCG, because Florida will lose at least 1 more SEC game.

People give him alot of hell but I find that TVA's ramblings are intelligent and well thought-out. More than you can say for some in here.

I try to be optimistic .. Although it is difficult after that bama game. It is of course possible for us to win the east but I wont be so optimistic as to say its probable.
KY and SC both want the same things as we do. They want to win out. KY needs a florida loss. SC will be a difficult game as will ark and KY.

Sometimes. He does tend to think outside of the box, at times being so far out that it just leaves you scratching your head.

I think that we've located Coker's supplier.

or maybe some say it because it is, in fact, possible.

For those that do not know - there is a big difference between "possible" and "probable"

:snoring:

At least my analysis has more to it than "UT sucks, they'll lose every game and finish 4-8!" Those are the arguments of shortsided knee-jerk fans.

Analysis is that we'll win because we're playing at home?

Arguments that we'll lose all but UL-L have merit, whether you want to admit it or not.

USC, plays solid D with weak O. Our D can make any weak O look like mid 90s Corhuskers and I suspect our O can hold its own. coin flip

UK - very solid offense, no D. We will need to put up about 45. We can - coin flip

Vandy - just hammered USC at USC. Should have beaten UGA. We should win, but their USC performance makes them scary.

Arky - will run for 500 on us unless we stack the LOS. I would like to think we will, but we have yet to enter with a game plan that (a) was apparent (b) made any real sense (c) made me confident in our ability to game plan. Our O can likely score at will, but Time of Possession could be hideous.

I think a bunch of coin flips hardly makes one anticipating losses shortsighted. One anticipating our winning out might be considered to be living in la la land. The home field definitely helps, but I don't think it's the advantage that you do. Our opponent, save Arky, have won on the road in some hostile SEC spots. I don't think ours will be as raucous given the apathy that losing big brings.

UF's D is terrible--they will definitely lose to either UGA or USC--both on the road! UT wins out, wins the east and plays lsu for the sec title.

I like this guy's way of thinking....Although it may be a little far fetched, but there is no reason to say its over till it's over....Let's go Vols!!

UF's D is definately NOT Terrible though!

Florida doesn't play Georgia on the road.
I wish they would change the venue of this game from Jacksonville to both campuses like every other game. That would put a damper on Helen Hunt I mean Mark Richt's dandy road record I am sure.

That's not the only problem with his logic. You guys are sipping some extra potent lethal doses of the Kool-Aid if you think UT has ANY shot of running the table.

Never said they would run the table, but there is no foul for hoping.
