I've always said that sports only exist to give gamblers something to bet on while getting drunk. Looks like it will be easier now.

Smoking weed, drinking on a Sunday morning, saying prayers in school before a math test, and sports betting have gone on and will continue to go on in the State of Tennessee. Many of these activities are done by our judges, politicians, police, lawyers, and bailbondsmen as well a wide cross section of other citizens. That state government is undertaking to make it legal now will make no difference to the people who participate the most, it's just a testament to how backwards they have been.

Anyone who wants to bet on sports has done it for years and years. It is about time the State gets a few taxes from it.

Long ago the US government banned moonshine, saying it was for health reasons. (some truth) but the main reason was tax revenue. Taxes, taxes taxes, that's the name of the game. Now in a state that does not have an income tax like we enjoy, (enjoy?) that state will find a way, given time and imagination, to tax any and everything. Gotta have money to give us the things we want and don't want to pay for out of our front pockets. But from the kindness of their hearts, the state government will give us this things. Round and round the money goes.

I see no problem in the tax because those who will pay it are those who gamble. I much prefer this tax than a
State and County income tax. In my county, we pay 9.25%; in the County I lived in in Gerogia, they now pay over 13% in State, County and federal income taxes.

It's called self taxation.

“Heavy physical work, the care of home and children, petty quarrels with neighbors, films, football, beer and above all, gambling filled up the horizon of their minds. To keep them in control was not difficult.” ― George Orwell, 1984

Don't get me wrong! I love that we Tennesseans have no income tax. We live all you out of staters paying our sales tax when you come to our great state. I just wanted to point out for those who thought the Leg. was "giving" us something a different perspective.

You should give brave new world a try, if you haven't. A buddy of mine and I made a bet in college as to which book would be more predictive of the future. So far it's a horse race.
