If Fulmer had fired Clawson mid season, would he have never been let go?

Seems alot of fans frustration was that after each blowout loss he seemed to be poo poo'ing people being upset by saying "we've won alot of games around here" and "we havent forgotten how to coach".

That's not what people wanted to hear. Fire Clawson, say changes are coming, good recruiting class coming in etc.

This is what Bama fans must have been like before Saban
It was his time
Was it done the right way probably not but it was time

He’s in a good spot now and hopefully keeps it so the politics stay at a minimum

At this point, who cares?

Naw, it was obvious after that UCLA loss that Fulmer was done. That UCLA squad was simply atrocious and they came back and humiliated us. Fulmer did have a good recruiting class in the works but remember the year before we finished in the 40s. If you aren't pulling in Top 15 classes every year you have no shot at winning the SEC. It was a steady decline just like Bowden at FSU.

Can anyone honestly say that they expected Fulmer to right the ship and start winning SEC and NCs once again? I love Fulmer but the writing had been on the wall for some time.

Clawson was not Fulmer’s main problem. Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and Alabama had better coaches that could adapt to the times and talent. He was eating dust in the SEC at the time and could not adapt.

Nah....Wyoming was Fulmer's biggest problem that year.

Even though it is nearly blasphemous, when you consider the inept coaches in the SEC when Fulmer made his run (late 90s) - there's no wonder he won so many games with the coordinators/recruiting he had. He had the magic dust - tenure, trust, long-standing coaches, brand, TV exposure, huge stadium, facilities, etc. Spurrier of course was his only nemesis - and Fulmer managed to beat him a few times. Thanks to Jimmy Sexton, the coaching talent in the SEC improved dramatically and left Fulmer behind.

Firing Clawson mid season probably would have looked worse in Fulmers eyes. He hired a guy that was open from the very beginning that his offense would take more than 1 year for the players to learn. And boy was that obvious. Didn't help that Fulmer had no qb developed.

08 was probably going to be rough no matter what. But Fulmer managed to pair himself with an offense that just didn't work at all. Didn't matter after that what happened with Clawson. It was already done.

Phil just became complacent. Happens all the time.

If stupid Jeff Fisher, had let the Titans lose a meaningless final game in Seattle, then it all be different.

let’s all speculate. You have a 50% chance of being right, no matter which way that you answer

BEFORE mid season Clawson was essentially fired...so no.
I'm not so sure he would have fired him at the end of 2008 if he was allowed to keep coaching.

Remember, Fulmer said later he didnt think anything was wrong.

Translation. 🤨

Seattle was planning to give Jim Mora one more year.
Then, the bad Titans beat them at home in last game that meant nothing to either team.
Owner fired Mora and hired Pete Carroll.
And the rest is history...

It is all Jeff Fisher's fault

He wasn’t bringing him back...totally neutralized him. Would say jmo...but it isn’t.

Interesting because during Fulmets full reign as coach he never let anyone go after one season and tried to talk Sanders into staying.

No he didn’t. Sanders “resigning” was a courtesy. Fulmer knew Cut was available and waiting out the year as an analyst for Notre Dame. And Clawson was the first outsider hired as a coordinator...”never” didn’t qualify for such. Fulmer was unwilling/uncomfortable with giving Clawson full autonomy with the offense. No way would he have brought him back.

Sanders resigned after the loss to South Carolina because he was tired of his family catching the brunt of the hatred for his terrible job he was doing.

Fulmer was too loyal to under performing asst coaches but Randy was his buddy and right hand man. No way was he firing him.
