UbbenJeremy Pruitt spent most of today’s open period working with the secondary. During a team defense drill, CB Bryce Thompson appeared to be working with the 1s.
PriceBryce Thompson was repping with the 1s during the open periods today.
b.mckeeAs Tennessee prepares for the Gators, the Vols defense went through 7-on-7 drills with all members of the secondary getting reps at the same time. Bryce Thompson worked on one side of the field with Kenneth George Jr. Alontae Taylor and Warren Burrell worked on the other.
Jeremy Pruitt was coy on Thompson’s availability during the SEC Teleconference earlier Wednesday afternoon and he’s not expected to offer much more later tonight when he meets with the media.
With Jim Chaney closely observing, the quarterbacks and tailbacks spent a whole period working on quick game stuff — swing passes, jet sweeps, speed options. Clearly, the Vols are focused on getting to the perimeter against the Gators. They involved some misdirection plays, too.
The line also worked on lots of short-yardage leverage stuff Wednesday, with Will Friend yelling, “3rd-and-1, who’s going to get us a yard?” Chaney later joined the drill and challenged Calbert and Wright by saying, “We’re going to run behind you big boys.”
simontonDefensively, the outside linebackers did a couple different pass rush drills, focusing on first-step explosiveness. Chris Rumph had his group in the chute racing for a towel and at the loser had to do 10 pushups. Defensive lineman Latrell Bumphus and John Mincey took part in the drill and both lost a couple reps.
b.mckeeTennessee’s tight ends caught passes today during the open portion of practice. It’s the first time we’ve seen the group catch passes during the open portion this fall.
The drill looked a little unusual with the ones and twos kind of shadowing each other in a handful of half-speed reps with a few scout-teamers mimicking Florida's pass routes. The inside linebacker tandems were Daniel Bituli with Henry To'o To'o and Shanon Reid with Jeremy Banks, but multiple defensive backs went through reps together.
Tennessee's offensive line began Wednesday's individual drills with their short-yardage drill. Four lineman have a large blocking held down by a scout-team and have to get lower to the ground and drive it a few yards with their hands on the pad. If you're struggling to picture it (video of the offensive line remains prohibited), just imagine having to get low to slide a heavy table along a carpeted floor at your house.
Tennessee's wide receivers spent one period working on getting off press coverage, which they will see a lot of from Florida's defensive backs on Saturday's.
p.brownThere were a few new wrinkles in the mesh-point work with the quarterbacks and running backs, including passes to the flats on half-rollouts and various toss plays, suggesting the Vols may be including some perimeter runs in their game plan.
At linebacker, Henry To’o To’o and Daniel Bituli continue to work as the first team inside linebackers. Will Ignont and Jeremy Banks come in behind those two in the drills.
Up front along the defensive line, Greg Emerson and Aubrey Solomon were two of the first team defensive linemen on Wednesday while Matthew Butler and Greg Emerson worked behind them. Savion Williams and Ja’Quain Blakely were the third duo through drills.
Tim Jordan worked as the second team back behind Ty Chandler while Eric Gray worked third. The quarterbacks and running backs worked on quick throws out of the backfield.
b.mckeeWanya Morris worked at left tackle, Trey Smith worked at left guard, Brandon Kennedy worked at center, Darnell Wright worked at right guard, and K’Rojhn Calbert worked at right tackle. That’s the same starting five the Vols trotted out against UTC this past weekend. Jahmir Johnson saw reps at left tackle as well.
