Watch Jayden Springer play tonight

SPRINGFIELD -- With stars like Jonathan Kuminga (injured) and Jalen Johnson (no longer with the team) out, Tennessee commit Jaden Springer took over and impressed in IMG Academy’s win over The Patrick School on Saturday. Here’s a closer look at what the No. 17 senior, per ESPN’s rankings, brings to the table.

STRENGTHS

- After the game, Springer told MassLive he played more shooting guard last season. For IMG, he’s the lead ball-handler, and IMG’s motivation in moving him makes a lot of sense. Springer is a rock solid ball-handler who rarely tries to do too much. His handle is strong enough to get into the paint, and he always seems to have his eyes up -- ready to spray passes to 3-point shooters.

- Springer looks so unconcerned by defenders, he’s almost casual. He and IMG struggled a bit with a press, but whenever he was able to get into half-court sets, everything looked easy.

- Defensively, Springer’s build/frame will help him a lot. He’s not freakishly long, but he’s strong and competitive, and he’s certainly a good athlete at the next level and beyond.

- We already talked about Springer’s passing a bit, but he also threw two fantastic lobs to IMG’s high-flyers that got the crowd out of their seats.

- While Springer’s shot still needs some work, he has clearly improved since last season.

IMG plays Knox Catholic January 25th in Knoxville according to the Knox News Sentinel today. That was in the article about UT just offering the Irish's Edwards a basketball scholarship.

Sounds a little like JJJ. We really need to develop one of our guards to be able to easily break the press. Vesci looks very slow relatively speaking for a pg. Hope he develops substantially.

May sound like JJJ, but plays like an alpha Dog. Springer wants the ball and will score when he wants to and for all u all that says UT doesn't get those one and done 5 stars, Springer will be that kind of 5 star. I guarantee it

Springer is probably more developed at the same stage and is much more aggressive with the ball and has a lot more of a bulldog mentality. Has the same current limitations with his jumper (not broken, just needs refining). Probably a better defender, too.

Springer is going to be a PG at the next level and push Vescovi over to the 2G spot, IMO. I would almost bet on it.

Most underrated part of springers game is his defense. Guarding the #1 point guard in the nation and doing a pretty good job.

Got another kid who doesn't look to score . There are 5 or 6 kids on that floor who are scorers .. we need to recruit some damn shooters... Springer and JJJ in game nobody will shoot ...

TAD- he is playing out of position this yr as he is more of a combo guard or 2 guard.

Also, it’s one half of one game bs #1 team in the country.

Others think he is a point guard .. TN doesn't have one ... currently ... that's a true PG ... maybe JJJ , Viscovi and Springer will all 3 play it ...

From what I have seen, we will have some dogs on the team next year. Right now the only alpha we have on the team is vescovi.
