Simmons, who's earned some plaudits recently from Tennessee coach Josh Heupel and multiple teammates on the offensive line, had a protective walking boot on his right foot. Merrill, the former four-star prospect from the mid-state, is dealing with a knee injury and had a large brace on his left leg. Young, the junior college transfer who's been one of Tennessee's standouts this spring, was trying to give it a go, but he had his right ankle noticeably taped and was talking to a trainer during drills.

Tennessee's defense continues to emphasize turnovers and started Thursday's individual periods with another three-station turnover circuit and three groups (defensive line, linebackers and nickels, and defensive backs) rotated through them.

On the offensive field, the running backs got some route-running and pass-catching work with Jerry Mack. The offensive line split into two groups (tackles and centers/guards) with the interior guys getting work pushing a sled, and both Cade Mays and Kingston Harris were back in drills after being limited late last week.

No new quarterbacks for the Vols on Tuesday and the order through routes-on-air went Brian Maurer, Harrison Bailey and Hendon Hooker. The accuracy and ball placement was pretty good on the short routes the Vols ran.

At Tuesday’s practice, Walker Merrill and Elijah Simmons were not In pads and are dealing with injuries, it doesn’t feel like they will make a return before the week is over. LaTrell Bumphus was not in pads today, though he actually got to dress without a black jersey. Byron Young was dressed out, but did go indoors while we are out there, after running a few individual drills. Didn’t look to be anything worrisome, as he was jogging off. Roman Harrison headed indoors after stretching. Jalin Hyatt looks to be moving well, which I know is a welcomed sign for the offense.

The QB’s were taking reps throwing slants and outs to their WR group. All three QB’s were out there, as Maurer and Hooker were slinging it pretty well, not working against DB’s.
