This is thread is admittedly not likely to matter because our offense goes so fast we don’t sub in players that we couldn’t continue to go fast with. That hurts the chances of any non RB to get any carries.

Whitehead wasn’t massive but he was our biggest RB going into the year. Not even saying he would’ve played unless he improved off last year, but he fit the mold better for short yardage/power back.

We have a clear answer in Jeremy Banks imo. We all know he’s a good RB, with the extra weight he’s put on he’d be great in goal line situations, or 4th and shorts.

Who else would you potentially like to see?

Unless we have a regular bulldozer back, don't bother. Recall when we had AJ Johnson in what I think we called our jumbo package? After the first one or two times he was used this way, everybody knew what was coming thereafter, which is why Georgia stuffed it when we tried it with them. Everybody knew why that normally DO player was on the field and lined up accordingly. I say forget using JB this way and just stick with what we do best. If it's maybe second down, two yards from the goal line, maybe, maybe, maybe, do a Chicago Bears thing. Instead of Refrigerator Perry, put Cooper May, Tyler Baron, Elijah Simmons, or Jeremiah Crawford in as a RB/HB.

When you have a mobile QB in option offense, the need for short yardage RB is lesser. Plus guys like Jabari, Dixon etc are strong runners and if our OL can't generate enough push for them to get a yard or two in those situations it is going to be long year. I am sure Huepel has ideas.

If the o line does it’s job, this offense doesn’t need a “short yardage back”

Couldn't that be said about every O-line ever? I'm worried about our O-line and the fact that all of our RBs are average to below average for a SEC RB. I wish we had a 230-250 lb bruiser.

Um, I believe AJ had 6 rushing TDs that year. There are plenty of fulltime running backs who don't have 6 rushing tds in a season.

Research shows shorter, quicker guys are actually better on short yardage runs.

This also aligns with our 3rd and short rushing from this past season. We converted them into 1st downs better than Bama or UGA and better than any year under Pruitt.

This scheme gets guys out of space. The goal is to hit the open hole asap and squirt through. It isn't to bang your head against the wall trying to load a bunch of guys in the box and trying to push through (nor should any logical scheme be set up with such an asinine vision in mind...exactly why the old fullback system is completely dead).

And just like some surmised we were out looking for a "short yardage back" in the portal...well we got Lyn-J Dixon. The best back available and fits our system. This idea we need some slow marauding big back is silly and not our style, nor should it be (barring you can land some freak of nature like Derrick Henry 5* type that has it ALL...good luck finding one of them).

O struggled in the 3rd down short yardage situations last yr so improvement is needed. Was it the RB's or O-line??
False. Unless you think being better than UGA, Bama, or massively better than UF (the most efficient rushing team in the league last year) is bad.

Wherever you're getting your 3rd and short 1st down conversion stats...may want to recheck your subscription.
