Why Tennessee threatens to bust 2024 Blue-Chip Ratio with Nico Iamaleava spearheading Josh Heupel's offense

Michigan just won the whole damn thing with just 54%. So blue chip ratio obviously means something but I feel like it’s similar to a lot of things in that it receives diminishing returns the higher you go.

For instance, last year the gumps had a BCR of 90%. Yes, you read that right. The team that we nearly beat at their own house until we pissed the bed had 9 out of every 10 players rated 4* or above. As a matter of fact, only 1 team in the playoffs last year was even in the top 5 for BCR(Gumps), another was ranked 14(Michigan), and Washington didn’t even make the list at all.

My point is I think the lines get kind of blurry once you get closer to 50%(like we are now) and consider this: Cedric Tillman was a 3*.

I’m not thinking in terms of Tennessee’s limitations, but rather in terms of their high upside. I believe the overall production will be there, but will it be similar to 2 years ago? I’m of the belief it will be really good.
I think we'll be really good too. With the slate we have, I'm not sure we won't have a slip up or two. D Coordinators in SEC are generally best in the country. Key is going to be Nico staying consistent week in/week out, where D coordinators scout your tendencies, especially on ball security, limiting turnovers. If we do that, and still have our balanced attack rushing, which I think we will, I think we'll do pretty well. For me, 8-9 wins is "pretty well" as the floor. If JH gets the team dialed in w/ Nico playing well and our DBs step up, then all bets are off and think we'll be in the playoffs, for sure.

Blue chip ratio doesn't mean as much as it used to, still a big barrier but give it a few more years. Recruiting and stockpiling 4 star reserves to spot play with little drop off until their Junior and senior years is coming to an end via Portal. These players will go where they can start out the gate with no transfer restrictions and bump their NIL by starting. In a few years I think and there may already be a service out there that re-rates the players after the final portal. With all that said Portal is great but the chemistry between coaches and players and the Administration buying in has to be there. It has moved the ball probably why Saban got out.

It's pretty clear what the strategy is. Get a bunch of high character guys with high floors, and pair them with an elite QB. And a solid team with an elite QB can 100% win a national championship.

Getting elite QBs is easier said than done. But if Nico and GMac both work out and we put two QBs high in the NFL draft back to back, I think it could be sustainable.

Tennessee currently thought to be in the lead for 2026 QB Faizon Brandon, who many think could be a generational talent and is the top rated player in 2026.

In my mind, the biggest factor now (since the advent of the portal) that can
help a team and determine playoff contenders is obviously the schedule.

With the schedule the Vols have, it makes it really difficult to make the playoff,
since the SEC has playoff type games every week. Having to play Bama and Ga
every year is harder than the playoff game. If we ever have a year where either Bama
or Ga or LSU is not on the sched, then of course it improves our chances of making the playoff.
