Reckon I find it interesting that out of the Top 100 high school prospects in Florida, that:

* 0 (Zero) have committed to UT
* 6 have us as a possibility
* Of those 6, according to 247, only one has us listed as warm. All others are Cool (and what is cooler than cool? Ice Cold...!!!!!)
* Most of the 6 have offers from 15-40 colleges

I just moved to the sunshine state full time, so have no historical basis to go by but, anyone have any thoughts about our lack of success in recruiting in Florida this year? Is this a norm or, an anomaly?

High school football spring practices started on Monday, which not only means teams preparing for the next season but also a monthlong window for college coaches to see prized recruits in their element.
With more than seven months before the early signing period, most of the 2025 class remains uncommitted.
That includes Zephyrhills standout defensive back D.J. Pickett, the top-ranked player on the 2025 USA Today Florida Network top 100. The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Pickett is a five-star recruit who caught 35 passes for 1,033 yards and 15 touchdowns and recorded 31 tackles and an interception in 2023.
Pickett joins Lakeland defensive lineman Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy (2022), Lakeland cornerback Cormani McClain (2023) and Chaminade-Madonna wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (2024) as the No. 1 player on USA Today's pre-spring list of the top rising seniors in the state.
Mandarin has a pair of players in the top 10: wide receiver Jaime Ffrench and safety Hylton Stubbs.
Florida State has commitments from two of the top four players on the list — Raines interior offensive lineman Solomon Thomas and Cocoa edge rusher Javion Hilson — and four of the top 60 players overall.
Here are the top 100 players on the pre-spring top 100.

Zephyrhills coach Nick Carroll on Pickett: "His length is one in a million. His hips and his footwork and his ability to transition is remarkable, which separates him from other guys. His ability to locate and track the ball is incredible. Sometimes you have DBs that don't have the best ball skills, which is why they play DB. But DJ is a different guy. And then he has the speed to go with his length. And he's physical."

2. Solomon Thomas (Raines IOL)​

I odn't think there was a need to put every name in there, perhaps a link for those who want to see the guys we aren't recruiting due to the staff's evals. Who cares where they come from? Other states, especially in the south, are catching up to FL in the number of quality recruits based on the population surge in the sun belt.....

Florida is a cherry pick state in terms of our recruiting plan. If there is a kid who has a tie and/or expresses sincere interest then it makes sense to recruit him. If not, there are too many other elite level players in our footprint (TN, GA, NC, AL) to spend finite time and resources there IMO. You're contending with distance plus the Big 3 + UGA/OSU for any player you'd want to land out of there which again JMO makes the risk/reward way too low.

If you don't have relationships with HS coaches in a particular state, it's an uphill climb. I would think CJH would have good relations considering his prior gig, but you never know. Also many of these many not be a "culture-fit" or a "character-fit". IDK

We should recruit nationally but FL is near the bottom of our opportunity areas. They have SEC options, Heup never got a four star player while at UCF and we never seem to get anyone elite to TN either. Cali is better for us as some guys have SEC dreams.

We don't need no stinkin floduh. Just sew up Tennessee, Jawja, the Carolinas and Virginia and get the occasional skill player here and there from anywhere and you're in the money honey

I mean...Florida just has so much competition in it....FSU, Miami, UF, UCF, USF.....Tennessee has so many incredible prospects within a 6 hour radius. We can literally recruit Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Carolinas, Virginia, Kentucky....and oh yes, our own state. Theres a ton of talent close to us, and then of course, we will get the occasional California kid or Texas kid or New Jersey kid.

Tennessee doesn't have to travel far to find great talent. Let the Florida teams have their own sausage fest down there. We will just pick our players out of Georgia's backyard.

If I were to rank the most important states for Tennessee to recruit, Florida would probably be 4th behind Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. Tennessee and Georgia are by far the most important states for UT and I think North Carolina is an easier state to recruit than Florida. Alabama and South Carolina aren’t too far behind Florida, if you ask me. To me, Florida is just a state that you cherry pick 1-3 players from in a class and call it good. Obviously, you try your best in the state, but I don’t think it’s as essential for UT as the top 3 states and whiffs can be canceled out if you get some good Alabama and SC players.

I wonder if a better measurement of the original question would be what percentage of players who accept an invitation to our camps from Florida (in comparison with other states) end up committing to us?

I remember in New Orleans there was a distinct divide between players who wanted to or were willing to play and practice "in snow" versus players who definitely did not want to deal with snow. Maybe that climate distinction is just as strong among Florida kids.

As for those who opined about character and culture, I think it's still valid to cite the "frost line" as a geographic marker of greater value for delayed gratification among the general population. But you would also think that football, with its year-'round preparation requirements, would negate in individuals that general cultural influence.

(I've never seen any studies on it, but I always thought that in some areas, the tourist season would serve the same calendar influence as harvest season in places like the mid-west -- a time when certain things must be done and other things delayed.)
