Teams have started running the same defense to stop our offense. Every game we’ve loss the past couple years have been to P4 teams running a 3-3-5 type of formation on defense. We have beaten it twice this year already, OU we dominated on D and didn’t have to do a ton on offense. NC State, we had a very nice day on offense because we ran more 12 personnel than our base 11 personnel look. Basically it’s having two TEs in on offense, it allows us to really run the ball well against this type of defensive look and it sets up PA passes very well to the TEs themselves, or deep to the WRs as the safety’s start to creep up. I get CJH wants to run his base offense as I’m sure that’s what Nico and the WRs want as well, but if teams are going to keep using this defense against you, it’s time to adapt. 12 personnel time, coach. Florida will not be able to stop our run game and PA pass game out of that formation, period.

They need to simplify some things for Nico. 12 personnel i thought was the answer last week. Nico needs to run for that 5 or 6 yards too when it's there. Get down don't take a bad hit and he'll be fine.
I’m not sure it’s “simplifying” actually. If anything open the playbook more to him, he will make mistakes. Get over it. Everyone has to make mistakes to learn from them. Let him go out and ball to the best of his abilities, and find out what he likes and what he’s comfortable with.

Seems like the training wheels are still on right now. Heupel's offense depends on the QB running at times. Haven't seen it so far. Probably trying to save him. Can't play scared , can't coach scared. Last Saturday happens when you do that.

You should be able to run on a 3-3 box, the problem is the o line couldn't get to the next level and open holes. With two tight ends you compact the route tree, and for a young QB struggling to find the open man it can make it more difficult. Not to mention you make it easier for the defense in two specific ways, you compact the field and get more people near the line of scrimmage to defend it and make it easier to disguise blitzes and confuse an already struggling QB.

Everything you said is true to some extent but there are also negatives like the ones I listed.

We still ran the ball fairly well just didn’t do it enough or penalties put us in distances that wasn’t realistic to run

We didn't run it well on first down, that was a big issue.

Still waiting for our couch coaches on VN to break out the super duper, double secret weapon...the wildcat package with Boo running it. Nobody can stop that. Nobody. We could win out with that genius move! Vols by fiddy!!

Agreed. Many times this year he has had a bunch of opportunities to pick up 5-6 yards and more by running. Heupel is gonna have to tweak his offense to match Nico’s strengths right now. We need more quick stuff. Slants and whatnot. And maybe throw some trick plays in there every now and then.

Also, I think Heupel needs to stop taking his foot off the gas.

God forbid fans give their opinions on a message board right? I mean it’s not like that’s what a message board is designed for or anything.

Doesn't matter if it's 10, 12, or 30 personnel. Just have to have a good gameplan and execute

I know you noticed too where we could’ve ran for 20+ against Arkansas multiple times throughout the game but instead overthrows his receiver.
