Defensive stop rate for FBS: Tennessee on top.

Chavis was good for us over that period of time.
His defenses did get exposed in Prevent situations and Mustang packages from time to time, but were exposed by a mobile QB every time.

Chavis' UT defenses had a 75% percent success rate when the opponent was facing a 3rd and long situation or more precisely, a situation where the offense needed to gain 6 or more yards.
Our 2024 defense has a 74.2% overall stop rate.
Chavis deserves another look from the fanbase.

I hope Banks sticks around a while.

It'd be nice to go back to how it was during the Chavis years and be able to expect really good defense just about every season.
Chavis only weakness was 3rd and Long. Teams seemed to know what play to call.

Ditto on Banks. The more comfortable he gets the longer he stays.

The Chief‘s defenses gave up a lot of yards and points. He could not stop Florida from scoring a bunch of points, especially whe Manning was here. He had a lot of talent, but I think we have more defensive talent tha we have had for the last 30-40 years, especially when one considers how muck offenses have improved.

The more I look at his resume I think its not likely. He is 52. Has been an assistant/DC his whole 28 year career. I only see 2 situations where we keep him much longer.

1. He has 0 interest in being a head coach and we continue to have success here.
2. He does not get an offer he's interested in.

Surely he knows just any head coaching job is not a good idea. He currently has very good job security at UT. Maybe his alma mater Central Michigan but I don't think Mcelwain is likely to leave there anytime soon? kinda wild Central Michigan seems to be quite the springboard school of head coaches. Since 2000 these are their coaches and all of them are well known names in the coaching world for good or bad. There is also the fact that most mid-level coaching jobs would be a downgrade in salary for him. Banks makes at least 1.5 mil a year as a comparison McElwain is making 1.6 as CMU head coach. Not many high profile schools that can pay a head coach over 2 mil a year are hiring first time guys and if they do they have short leashes.

You remember Chavis much different than I do. I mostly remember 3rd and chavis against UF year after year after year.
That's a phrase you remember because it was repeated so much. In 97 Dougie Johnson threw three touchdowns on third down against us and we lost. But that was not indicative of Chavis's whole entire career. He was the defensive coordinator for quite a few big wins. But he didn't get any credit for them. He only got the trailer trash outrage for the losses...

3rd and chavis happened every year. The old 3 & 17 and he would rush 4 and give a 20 yard cushion. He may have had some good defenses, but that crap happened far too often

Chavis would give up 60 pts and 800 yards in today's style of game.

“3rd and Chavis” is like a password to let people know you’re a real Vol.
