UT Martin is coming off a seasoning opening loss to North Alabama 66-63 as an fyi.

I would really like to see our rebound advantage be 15+ in this one. I know Coach Kim has been harping on them for their board play and she has not been pleased.
IIRC, Coach Kim's summary of the boxing out issue in the postgame interview was "...they're just going to have to lose a game to understand how much we mean that that is important to us."

Following such a loss, I wonder what the repercussions would be at the following practice? I get the feeling that they might be very Pat-like.

In some thread last week there was a discussion (that I can't find now) of what would happen when we encountered a quick-whistle, ticky-tack foul calling, trio of refs.

Been looking at the various stats from CKC's season at Marshall in HerHoopStats, and noticed an interesting correlation.

In the "Team Advanced Box Scores" database, looking at Marshall's 6 regular season losses and 1st round loss in the NCAA to VaTech--as you would expect--the losses correlated highly with poor numbers for EFG% (Effective Field Goal Percentage). That's the team shooting percentage after accounting for the value of 3-point attempts.

No surprise that shooting poorly would correlate well with the Loss column.

But... the non-shooting factor in that chart that had the second most overlap with their losses was PF% (Foul Rate) -- the percentage of plays where a foul was committed by Marshall.

Of Marshall's 5 worst games in PF%, 4 resulted in losses. Of their 11 worst games in PF%, 5 resulted in losses.

Each game is its own story, so were the refs (and these were road games) calling it so close that Marshall's press game became counterproductive? (An efficient way to break a press is to walk down to the foul line and take free shots!) Were Marshall's best shooters forced to the bench early with personal fouls? Or were the Marshall players (most of these losses coming early in the season) just indecisive and slow getting into correct position on defense?

I'd love for some reporter to ask CKC about that, before the Lady Vols encounter a whistle-happy crew and CKC is unable to comment candidly on the subject.

After myself over-estimating the points that our opponent will score for two consecutive games, I think I've finally absorbed that our scoring defense will be better than Kim's teams at Glenville and Marshall. The difference in athleticism is just too large between Tennessee and those two spots.

At the very least, it should mean that we should not be losing to non-power conference teams, just off of them not being able to score anywhere close to enough points to match what the Ladies can do.

As for UTM: in their only regular season game so far (loss to UNA), they had 3 different bench players get 10+ minutes, and their five starters played between 25-30 minutes. That said, 25-30 minutes against the Lady Vols ain't going to be nothin' like 25-30 minutes against UNA.

The press will feast on UTM's starters, and then feast even more on their bench.

UTK - 128
UTM - 51

May the better UT win. ;)

No to the Kimettes.
Yeah, too cute. Bet you're more of a "Kim-tistas" fan.
Kim-igoths?
Kim-gols?
Kimarauders?

Fan-generated nicknames seldom have the panache to stick. But it's still a good sign when fans are identifying with a new team strongly enough to want to give them a nickname! I'm pretty sure this team and this style will continue to garner creative attempts from all of us.

Great post. I saw some very physical fouls committed by Samford right under the ref’s nose. No call.

From the ESPN article:

"Caldwell also brought with her a level of accountability that was new to the players. A 45-pound weight sits wrapped in a towel along the baseline. Any player that fails to box out during a practice must push the weight the length of the court."

With apologies to Tennessee Ernie Ford...

🎶 "45 pounds--whadaya get? Stretch in your shorts and soaked with sweat..."
