November 7, 1959, undefeated, #1 ranked, defending National Champions LSU with Heisman winner Billy Cannon comes to town. Vols win 14-13 in one of the epic upsets in Vol History.

Cannon stopped on 2 point conversion by Wayne Grubb, Bill Majors and Charley Severance. He absolutely did not make it. How do I know, I was sitting on about the 40th row in Section A with one of the best seats in the House. What a day for a 12 year old Vol fan.

I was also at that game. Wasn’t Gene Etter and Bill Majors the tailbacks in that game? Jim Cartwright play an outstanding defensive game that day.

Gave this a "Like". Wish there was a "Love" tab. You'd have gotten it from me with this post. Thank you for sharing!

My parents were at this game.

I wasn’t born until two years later but my father grew up in New Orleans a huge LSU fan. He ended up going to Carson-Newman where he met and married my mom. Bragged about the Tigers for days before the game and was crushed when they lost. Mom just quietly smiled.

I also was in attendance that day! Vols were in a terribly low spot compared to their glorious history. But that afternoon, they rose to the occasion. One of my best all time vol memories was the two point conversion stop! Is Charlie Severance still around? A big shout out to him if he is! I haven't been in Neyland since the night Hershel ran over Bill Bates! I do go back a ways!

Correct, Cartwright returned an int 59 yards for a TD on a play that turned the game around. Ironically both Cartwright and Grubb were from Athens.

I was 17 and it was my first in person game. Made me a Vol for Life. Great memory.

Wayne Grubb and I were buddies and played a lot of basketball during the off season. I remember he was guarding me on a jump shot and my right elbow hit him squarely in the mouth. He was out cold We did a couple of other things I will not talk about. He is one of the good ones.

i was there and a student at the time
not only the two point conversion but their Wendell Harris missed a late medium range field goal that would have won it
LSU argued that that is was good to no avail

Great to hear memories from those who were there. I had many great nights in 60s and early 70s listening to LSU football at night beamed out of French Quarter on WWL. This was after Tennessee home games that always kicked off at 2pm. And just finished a book on Billy Cannon. He was quite a character and athlete!

Charlie Severance had a successful insurance business in Knoxville  I think this is the famous photo.
Met Charlie at the Victory party for Bill Haslams first run for Governor. Didn't even introduce myself, just walked up and said, "he didn't make it." Charlie smiled and said they were lying on the ground and Cannon said, ""I made it.." Charlie said I dont think so.

Unfortunately the Vols lost the next 3 games to Ole Miss, UK and Vandy or this game would be ranked even higher in the list of great Vol victories.

Yep, began listening to LSU night games in the late 50’s I guess. Pick of Dixie football. Only one college game on tv then, was usually big 10 teams. Vols not often. Came in clear.
