MSU game this Saturday and FG’s

By asking this question, you are creating a problem that does not exist. Talk about the end of the world very much? Everybody goes through a slump no need to address it differently. It is all situational any way. 4 & 1 or 4 & 10, from the 35 or 25. Comfortable lead kick the FG. Missing the FGs against KY may not have been a slump it may have been a breakdown in the line or center. Main point id the problem and fix it.

Nothing about end of the world. If Tennessee is up a large margin and option is try a fg or just run the ball and either gain first down for more time to go off the clock or try a fg. Simple question. YOU just read more into it then there was.

I don't think he will play Gilbert any differently than he has been. He's already stated he has confidence in him. If he treats him differently now, that could potentially make Gilbert second guess himself even more than he already is.

We can end the discussion right here. He had one bad game.

The problem us, he needs to be able to kick them in high pressure situations.

While true, getting in game reps is the way through a slump. He needs to regain some confidence. And hopefully the score is wide enough in the 2nd half that we can give him a couple extra of in game opportunities.

It would be good for him to get some FG attempts in this game for sure. He needs to hit a couple in a game situation before going to GA.

I’m not sure I really get the question or why there needs to be a large margin to have a field goal try. If we bog down on the opening drive at 0-0 and have 4th and 6 on their 22, you cart him right out there for a 39 yarder and you don’t even hesitate.

Im Not saying don’t use him. I’m saying if let’s say we are up 28-30 points and it’s 4th quarter and it’s 4 and 2 at the 25. Go for it or give Gilbert an attempt. That’s all.

No I didn't read more into it, you ask a situational type question and without the situation stated. Not a simple question. My guess is CJH will send the kicker out to kick the FG --- Early in the game, late in the game, take the points. Depends on the yard line as well. If you got the lead add to it. You may have to punt. It is not like they haven't had a week to think about it and take corrective action. Golfers do this all the time. It is called Head Space and Timing. Same for kickers, once they get blocked the second one comes pretty quickly thereafter.
CJH will figure it out. Not a simple question. I will assure you that CJH knows and will not send him out on the field to fail.

I hope he gets a chance at one or two. We will need them against Georgia. Not worried about this game.

If Tennessee is up by a good margin and Heupel
Has a chance for a fg, short or long, do you think he will give Gilbert a chance for gaining some confidence?
I think finishing that early drive is more important than getting the kicker confidence, we can not finish an opening drive to save our life right now and they have been great opening drives, too good to come up empty handed. A kicker is like a good shooter in basketball IMO, got to see some go through the uprights, no matter the situation. By the same token, I think we are at the point in the season with the playoff rankings out, if you can beat Miss State by 75, do it. Style points matter.

You’re sayin this as if it’s a foregone conclusion Huep is going to go for every 4th down we’re in field goal range. Hes going to send him out like he has been, as he should.

I know nothing about kicking but it seems like the couple he missed were pressured from the edges and probably adjusted his swing. Maybe they need to block better, keep the edges sealed

Yes you did. Your first sentence says no problems exist and your last sentence says id the problem. And I did say a comfortable Lead which means without spoon feeding it to you. That option is run the ball and clock some, kinda mercy rule like, or give your kicker an opportunity to get out of his “slump” as you say.

Actually, he’s had two bad games. He missed two vs. Bama has though they were from 50 -52 yards. He wasn’t close on the three vs KY. So he’s now missed five of six (or seven) in past two games.

Treat him exactly the same as you always would have. He knows he has missed a few lately, but my guess is he has pushed himself in practice a lot more. Kicking is all about mechanics, and I’m sure that’s all he has been working on. You also have to have a very, very short memory when you’re a kicker and just focus on mechanics and the moment. He’ll be all right.
