westwords Marvin West's piece as He sees it. Read it!
* Dylan Sampson is a gritty warrior, an NFL running back-to-be. He deserves at least an honorable mention in Heisman Trophy talk. Sampson carried a big load Saturday night, 30 runs, 149 yards. He is the second player in Tennessee history with eight 100-yard rushing games in a season. Jay Graham had 11 in 1995.

* The “elite” Volunteer defense is eroding. Someone must tell defensive coordinator Tim Banks that young linebackers are chasing decoys and leaving the middle wide open.

“We were out of gaps,” said Heupel.

The Vols actually gave up more yards per rush than they gained. Let us again mourn the injury loss of Keenan Pili. westwords

Eroding all the way to giving up just 17 points thanks to a season high in sacks (4). MSU has score less than 20 only twice this season. Our defense ain't eroding.

I agree not "eroding" as Mr. West stated, But, we certainly don't want people running it up the middle. LBs must maintain gap integrity and not fall for the Eye Candy..

UT had the LBs covering the motion knowing that MSU is competitive in their passing game thus limiting their ability to score. Against UK and MSU our defensive tackles failed to clog the middle as they have been doing all season. But in their defense both tackles were being double teamed. We just need to make adjustments.

Our young LB Smith had a rough night. But he is going to be a star. Book it
There were 2-3 plays where he was late coming out of coverage and just allowed the qb to run for the first down. It’s a tough spot to be in because if you leave to early it’s likely just a pass for a first down, but I’d rather the qb have to throw than just hand it to him on the ground.

True, but "The Vols actually gave up more yards per rush than they gained." This hasn't happened all season . Ark had 5.9 yds per play vs Ut's 5.2, but Ark got theirs' passing.
It doesn't matter if we give up 300 yards rushing if the other team doesn't score something. I believe the front 7 will get a large dose of watching the eye discipline this week in practice.

There was a glaring one where he dived outside on a run play and the RB cutback right through his gap. We had a safety or nickel redundantly in that outside gap and could tell from his body language that he immediately knew where he should have been. But he's a freshman and eventually, I think he and Carter will be our best LB combo in a long, long time.

I feel like the defensive game plan was more to blame on the MSU success than anything. MSU had been lethal on play action in recent weeks. I think we were playing to take that away. MSU playing an uptempo offense also didn't allow for us to swap out guys very often either. But I recall we performed better against the run when we were able to sub guys like Moi in the game.

I will say that I hated the goal line defense on that 4th goal on MSU's 1st TD. Everyone and their mother knew it was gonna be a run from the 1 yard with the type of success they had on that drive. I have no idea why we weren't heavy with everyone right up on the line. The high percentage play was running the ball, and that's what they did.
