Why is 27 not on the field when the game begins and why do we repeatedly have him standing on the sideline when the other team is backed up on its own goal line?

Pearce (27) rotates with josephs. They do share starting. They platoon depending on what defensive alignment is running and what they think the opposing offense will do.

UT has the good fortune this year to be deep at alot of positions on O and D year and they rotate out lineman and others like crazy to stay fresh all game. I have seen the entire D line rotate out at one time.

As mentioned, fresh horses late in the game are a difference maker. Most teams this year do not have 12 OL to rotate with our 12 DL.

Also each DL has different tendencies. It must me a nightmare to film prep for because each is a little different and we can build different combinations as the game progresses.

None of these replies answer my question about having the opponent pinned on their own goal line. Makes no sense for him to be resting on the sideline. It's an opportunity to score. He can rest later.

Someone get this man his answer!!!! He's requesting it ASAP!!!.......There has to be someone here who can answer this question!!!.......it's of the utmost importance, the information obtained will probably have to be forwarded to Heupel to help out this defense who is only ranked #1 in the country

Generally speaking those are running downs and maybe the staff feels like we have other defensive ends better at stopping the run or have certain packages they like to run defensively based on the opponents offensive tendencies.

Here’s a good question for you. Why is Jayson Jenkins the one who got the safety at Oklahoma? He’s technically “3rd string.” Also, why was Joshua Joseph’s the guy pushing the OL back into the RB trying to stretch the ball forward. The answer is our DL is deep and they wear down offenses throughout the game because they are fresh. A fresh Joshua Joseph’s is better than a worn out James Pearce because in the 4th when you need Pearce, he’s ready.

What do 99% of all teams backed up on their own goal line do? They run, right? Who stops the run better Jenkins/Bailey/West at 290 lbs or Pearce/Joseph at 245?

I'm going with my best defensive player. Pearce. Both times we had that opportunity they got the first down and got out of trouble.

Where have you been all season? We have basically rotated three complete D-lines every game. One of the reasons our defense does not get tired.

You do realize that our defense is considered elite this year. Again, I am glad we have Rodney Gardner and Tim Banks making the real decisions. The defense is just fine.

One thing that I agree with McElroy, is in the Alabama game he said that our defensive line rotations are like hockey shifts. As a father of two hockey players, he’s exactly right. We have so much depth that we constantly rotate to keep fresh legs, and like in hockey, you want your stars fresh in the end of the game. That’s probably why you see Pearce on the sidelines a lot.
