Did they still call it a late hit penalty? I was confused by that sequence. The commentators said it was “offsetting penalties” on that play, but it wasn’t clear what UTEP’s penalty was.

Also, I think it was atrocious that it wasn’t ruled targeting. The UTEP defender led with the helmet and hit Moore right in the facemask well after Moore threw the ball. I don’t know what targeting is.

Totally agree, that was textbook targeting and should have been called. Refs trying to cover up their incompetence I guess for not calling it immediately.

Replay officials are supposed to be independent. Their purpose is to CORRECT misses or wrong calls. Instances like this are the reason instant replay failed the first go-round in the NFL.

I thought it was targeting crown of
UTEP player hit facemask....I don't think officials know what rule is or don't want make call that upsets coach...
But tell me why UTEP coach can stay on field during game and nothing called or said...
You can call 12 men on field if player had 1 foot on field but a coach camps on playing field is ok
I think coach for UTEP acted like
Psycho A**hat entire game.. sorry post is long Go Vols!!!!

I told my wife during the game that I was glad we didn’t have a hyper coach like that.

They did call it a late hit but it was negated by offsetting penalties so they replayed the down
