I'm all Vol all day 365 days a year ! But these numbers seemed bad to me . For reference I decided to calculate the win loss record of teams Notre Dame beat . ND is a team I'm critical of every year for playing a weak schedule. Combined win loss record of teams ND beat this year 66-64 .
I sure hope we get to host a playoff game in Neyland stadium and I hope these numbers don't hurt us in the eyes of the selection committee. There will be a whole lot of politics being played the next two weeks .
Go Vols !!

I think it has to be looked at more deeply than just overall opponents' records. Notre Dame isn't in a conference, so they have to schedule every game themselves. They typically play a couple MAC teams, a couple service academies and the rest are ACC teams(since they started being an ACC team in other sports) and USC. Despite the records, MAC teams and service academy teams aren't very high quality teams. Army and Navy had their best seasons in recent memory and still weren't any significant threat. The best actual teams Notre Dame played this year were Texas A&M(8-4), Louisville(8-4), Georgia Tech(7-5) and USC(6-6). The overall opponents record gets inflated by the MAC teams and service academies having decent to good record against their level of competition. Conversely, our opponents' record was negatively skewed by our MAC opponent(Kent St) finishing 0-12 and Mississippi St/Kentucky finishing a combined 6-18.

Notre Dame had Army and Navy with good records. Do we really think they are as good as those records? Notre Dame also got the worst team from the ACC, the 14th team from the ACC, and the worst team from the Big Ten. It was like a round robin of suck on their schedule. Our SOS blows ND out of the water.

We are way ahead of ND in Strength of Schedule, so I hope the opponents wins and losses do not apply here. Politics is where partial truths flourish though..

Playing devils advocate , is never a popular position . Combined win loss record of all 12 of our opponents this season is 66-78 46 % , if you round up . If that is considered a good strength of schedule , then my definition of strength of schedule is way off . Our only marquee win was against a 9-3 Bama team , most would agree the worst Bama team in 15 years . I am just stating the arguments our enemies will be making behind closed doors , for the next two weeks.
I think we definitely make the 12 team playoff , but in my opinion we will be very fortunate to land a 5-8 spot , when it's all said and done .

We are ranked 6, 2 in front of us will lose. Because 4 play each other. Losing a cc game might not hurt you for getting in, but can impact seeding. If UGA looses and PSU gets walloped we could be 4th ranked with a 6 seed. At it stands now we should be 6th ranked and 8th seed and hosting at worse.

The difference is the SEC is beating each other up. Notre Dame is scheduling games with a weak ACC conference.

A better comparison to me is how have TN opponents done against teams from other Power 4 conferences.

Notre Dame is greatly helped by the records of Army and Navy, not exactly powerhouse teams.

When is someone going to take a stand and force Notre Dame to actually play against real competition? Their record in the SEC would match Vanderbilt.

I think they will make the arguments very publically

We played some bad teams record wise but we also Played 7 Bowl eligible >6 wins, and I think Miss State would have a better record just 2 OOC wins if they played Notre Dame's schedule. They were not a bad team as their record it's just tough in the SEC, they scored 31 on Georgia, same with Kentucky they usually get 6 wins just 4 this year and a 13 to 10 loss to Georgia. SEC somebody has to take the losses not everybody can win 10 toughest conference top to bottom by far.

Imo, your whole body of work gets you in the playoffs and the "what have you done for me lately" determines your seed. Ohio State is more deserving of a playoff spot than Tennessee. Flame all you want but it's true. They defeated 2 playoff teams, one on the road, with little effort. They also had the best team in the country on the ropes in their house. BUT losing to Michigan, without their best players, in your house means you shouldn't host. This is why I don't have an issue with a team you beat being ranked ahead of you (Penn state / tosu for example) because what have you done lately matters. It's why we have a weekly poll.
