CFP Path Difficulty

Giving us the hardest path is one thing, but penalizing the unbeaten #1 seed and rewarding the CCG losers the way they did is an outrage. They could not have f***ked this thing up any more if they were doing it on purpose.

The most comical line in that article is on one hand saying in reference to SMU how much "deserved" their bid is, and yet making Penn State's path the easiest because they play ... SMU! The hack national media in a nutshell.

I was shouting this earlier we have the most retarded bracket. Punished for not being #12 lol. So stupid. #11 gets to play #3 and #12 #4 if they win, but we get #1 if we win ahahhaq

Boise and ASU is freaking comedy

Our path may appear difficult, but I am pleased. I think we have a very good shot of not just beating, but whipping OSU. We have a fantastic run game and they have a terrible run defense. A big road win will go a long way to help build confidence before a match up with Oregon. I simply can't wait. Go Vols!!!

The path is so difficult we may not make it. I don’t know if you guys have heard of this thing called an interstate, but it takes up a lot of space and for us to get to Columbus - It will take years and years of bleeding from our fingertips and toes and probably an orifice or two unless we have the right coach, then Shazam! Oh yeah! We’re going to be there next Saturday! Thanks, Coach Heup!! Thank you for being the bad ass that you are! Much love and respect, sir!!!!

Should be like the NFL. #1 team gets the lowest remaining seed after round 1, 2nd highest remaining team gets 2nd lowest remaining seed, so on and so forth. This bracket is just dumb.

It is asinine, and completely convoluted. And any thoughts that they might improve it in 2016, think again. The article below shows some of the thinking going on, which is quite likely to make this thing a double clustef***k.

I'm not sure what the difficulty is in understanding that the obvious and fairest solution is a 16-team playoff (I would prefer 8, but there's no way they'll ever go backward) with the teams ranked #1 thru #16, with auto bids for conference champs but no byes. #1 plays #16, #2 plays #15, and so on.

If you keep it at 12 teams, just eliminate the auto byes for conference champs and give the byes to the top four ranked teams. And both of these formats have a BCS type computer program determining rankings, doing away with the odious "committee".

These proposals, of course, have zero chance of ever being instituted because they take control out of the hands of the powers that be, meaning the SEC, Big 10, and ESPN.

It is like the NFL. A 9-8 conference winner gets to host a playoff game even thought there may be a 12-5 Wild Card team.

Of the 9-12 seeds who do you see having a chance of winning other than UT? In that scenario, UT still plays Oregon in round 2.

Yes, the seedings sucked and they could have moved some teams around.

Simply eliminate the idiotic auto byes for conference winners and you solve a good part of the problem. Rank them 1 thru 12, and the top 4 seeds get the byes. If you did that the matchups and paths are a lot more equitable, and you're not giving byes to teams that are ranked #9 and #11.

Here are the final CFP rankings. Being a conference champ gets you in the tournament like it did #16 Clemson, who move to #12 and eliminate Alabama. Look at how much better the potential second round matchups would be.

1. Oregon
2. Georgia
3. Texas
4. Penn State

5. Notre Dame
6. Ohio State
7. Tennessee
8. Indiana
9. Boise State
10. SMU
11. Alabama
11. Arizona State
12. Clemson

Does the committee change every year? Just curious

It is not like the NFL. I'm not talking about the first round, like I said in my post, I'm referring to the 2nd round mainly. Oregon, the best team in the country has one of the hardest routes. They should have one of the easiest. They should get the lowest remaining seed left in the 2nd round, the next highest seed gets the next lowest remaining seed, etc.

TN Fans. After crawling around in the dumpsters looking for scraps for 20 years, you're complaining about the draw in the CFP. What a sad bunch of Nancies.

Do you say it in Sandor Clegane voice in your head? 😅

I think a lot of what's getting interpreted as complaining is a fair observation that the playoff as currently set up, is as much an inclusive pageant as a balanced competition. We can call Boise State and Arizona State "worthy" for winning their respective conferences, that's fine. But there are any manner of objective metrics available that say that a bunch of teams that are better than them aren't participating at all, forget seeding of the teams that are in it. For ourselves, I don't care if we play Ohio State in the Shoe or Texas on the moon. But we improved on Florida State getting jobbed last year by saying in effect that Boise State is better than teams like BYU or Alabama who, unlike Boise State, don't just have good W/L records but have beaten teams this season who are in the playoff.

If you bothered to actually read most of the "complaints", they aren't whining about 'poor UT' but about the asinine and convoluted system, which as stated is more of an inclusive beauty pageant than a true competition.

Even though I believe the three 3-loss SEC teams that just missed the playoff are better than a few of the conference champions who were included, I don't have a problem with rewarding those champs. But while a reward of a playoff bid is sufficient, the high ranked byes given to Boise St. and ASU throw the bracket into an unbalanced mess favoring schools that didn't earn an 'easier' path.

If you have no problem with the arbitrary way the bracket was done just because UT is in, good for you. Enjoy the festivities and allow us to have a discussion.
