Tennessee's ranking in 247's composite talent index in 2024 is #17.

Teams that are ranked ahead of us in overall talent include Michigan, USC, Miami, Florida State, Florida, Penn State, LSU, and Oklahoma. Tennessee had less talent than every other playoff team except for ASU and SMU.

The fact that we went 10-3 and got into the playoffs is an exceptional achievement.

Tennessee was #16 in overall talent in 2023 and #19 in 2022.

I have plenty of criticism for the staff and want to see us make some changes to take the next step as a program.

However, the truth is that we have gotten exceptional in season coaching that has gotten the most out of our team despite glaring personnel holes in 2022 and 2024. If anything, these results should inspire confidence that this staff can compete for national championships with slight improvements in the overall talent level on our roster.

Where does the critical issues with staff come from? We are not involved in their teaching each day, we don't know if it is the coaches or the players. Fans were furious with Banks last year, this year defense was one of the best in the country. He didn't learn to coach over the summer.....nope, he got better players in the secondary.

Banks has the stats to show improvement. OC, WR, and O Line coaches can’t say the same.

Banks is not aggressive in his approach which is disappointing. Our offensive approach no longer includes all the sets and the motion that it routinely had. I like the motion because it creates confusion. We no longer catch opponents surprised and unaware anymore. Aside from spreading the wideouts sideline to sideline, we have scaled a lot of things back. Hooker was a spectacular QB with great presence, but we could be doing more to protect a suspect offensive line.

Nico can't do what Hooker could yet. We don't want to ask him to do things he isn't capable. As he gets faster you will see more of the 2022 look

We definitely got bounced in our 1st round game like we were the #10 out of 12 teams in the playoff. The fact that we didn’t even look like we had a pulse was what was absolutely disappointing.

Truthfully, I’m not sure what to conclude (if anything) for next season. The coaching seems like it is still stuck somewhere in the second tier with our inability to perform in big games on the road. The boneheaded penalties, fumbles, bumbles and overall undisciplined play is another indicator of possible coaching shortfalls.

Some of that is probably attributable to the aforementioned talent gap, but there’s some building of a championship culture and mindset that is yet to be completed.

Yes, Nico can’t and I acknowledged that general situation. My point was that we could have done things a little differently on both sides of the ball, irregardless of where Nico was in his development.

Or it could be totally undisciplined unfixable players. Do you actually think our coaches are not telling these guys to knock off the freaking false starts? Think Sampson is trying to fumble or doesn't know he needs to hold onto the ball?

Everyone wants to hold the coaches responsible for errors made by the players. I am sure our coaches recruit guys that they feel can fill gaps on the roster. Some do and some don't, no team out there hits 100% on recruits and in the prortal.

This staff can compete for championships with just a little more talent? Are you serious, brother? How many times were we out-coached this past season? I wish I had your optimism and confidence.
