The New Limit the Sec isn’t getting this year

The SEC announced that it will keep the 85-scholarship limit for the 2025 season, but will allow teams to fill the remaining 20 spots with walk-ons.

Under the guidelines put forth by the House v. NCAA settlement, colleges can roster up to 105 players. Schools will be allowed — though not required — to fund scholarships for all 105 roster spots depending on the guidelines set by their respective conferences. The SEC became the first conference to formally set limits in football for next season. With 85 scholarships available, there will be 20 walk-on spots for each school.

there is nothing (I have seen) that says the 20 walk-on's cannot get NIL money. So now you basically have 105 players and the best ones play.

What is the purpose of having 105 man roster when half of the 85 man roster doesn't play?
I think it is a damage control measure by the NCAA although they aren't admitting it.

It's a way to avoid the appearance of further Sherman Act violations by eliminating walk ons that are completely uncompensated labor. The SEC is stupid for doing something that expressly goes against this intent.

With NIL, why should scholarships even matter now? Just have the NIL collective pay extra fee for tuition. You can sign as many players as you want and call them "walk-ons". If our ELITEs would THINK OUTSIDE of the Box, they could make that happen and scholarships shouldn't even matter.

Maybe Sprye or Tennessee should hire me.

So, old: you can have 85 scholarships and another 40ish walk-ons for a total roster of 120+.

New: you can have a roster of 105. Want to put them all on scholarship? Knock yourself out.

Those Will Brooks stories are going to be a lot harder to come by. I wonder how long it is before those 105 man rosters are split into a playing team and a practice squad, more like an NFL team, to give some shape to who should expect to get paid what. 105 is almost precisely twice an NFL roster.

I bet this will change after next year with the SEC not doing so good in the playoffs and getting embarrassed in most games.

Don’t know, we still at 83 because of sanctions. 105 scholarships will be difficult to reach in 2025
Wasn’t talking about 2025, the SEC stayed at 85 instead of the 105 the NCAA allowed for 2025. As far as I have read they were the only conference.

Jesus, with the 105 scholarships will make the women's teams at schools huge. They will now have to add another 20 players over all women's sports.
