Are this season's Vols better than the 2023-24 team?

In my opinion they certainly can be, and here are my reasons and caveats:

* More places to go for offense in this group, especially if (when?) Igor regains his 3-point stroke. Last year's team was far too dependent on DK, with the only other offensive weapon being the Aidoo post game, which collapsed against any physical team. The Vols can get offense from Lanier, Gainey, Z, the lob game, and if Dubar and Milicic get some consistency from 3 this group will be unguardable.

* I love the offensive scheme this year with all the off ball movement, ball screens and constant actions throughout the shot clock. Last year it was pretty much dump it in to Aidoo or let DK cook. JJJ and SV, much as I loved them, were way too inconsistent to rely on at all. The growth of Gainey has made him a legit weapon in this offense, and teams can't just sit on one player and shut this group down.

* The rebounding, specifically on the offensive glass, is elite and game changing, like we saw today. Guys like Milicic, Okpara, and Dubar are relentless, fitting right in with the balls to the wall approach of Shack and Z. Rebounding and defense will keep you in games where the offense isn't clicking, like we saw in the Illinois game. That's a game we lose 10 out of 10 times last year if DK was in foul trouble like Lanier and Ziegler were.

* Lanier isn't Knecht in that he's not as likely to single handedly take over games, but within this scheme and the threat of other players keeping teams from focusing solely on him, he will be lethal.

* Okpara is a definite upgrade on Aidoo. He knows his role and is getting more comfortable every game. We don't need him to be a post presence on offense in this scheme, but as an offensive rebounder and lob threat, he is invaluable.

* Cade Philips has stepped up in a huge way, and is getting better game by game. Knows his role and is a relentless competitor.

If there is one huge caveat, it is obviously the lack of depth, especially with the bigs. Estrella would have been a huge factor, eating up minutes and offering a post presence and lob threat off the bench. We can't afford a single injury right now going 8 deep, and Boswell stepping up could be incredibly important the deeper we get in league play. But if we have some luck with health, this group has a chance to be really special.

What do you guys think?

I think the OP and many others are crediting Dubar for production that is yet to occur. At this point he’s nothing more than potentially a guy that may help out if he finds his comfort zone on this team. I’m rooting for it as we will be better if he does but to date he really hasn’t done much.
I think that's true in terms of points production, but he does look like he fights defensively and offensively to get rebounds already. That's production, just not consistent points (yet, I/we hope!).

I think of him as a sub that doesn't hurt the team when he is out there. If he produces more, it is just icing on the cake. At this point in the season, I don't see anyone who is a liability. That helps make for a potential title team, if you ask me.

By the way, very good analysis by OP.

Check the stats - he’s not been impressive in points, rebounds, etc. He’s getting the VN Carr treatment of being overvalued whenever he makes a contribution.

Again, I’m pulling for him and hope he can provide that 40% corner 3 shot he had last season.

So far...yep.

Yeah, right now, we look like we could be a real national title contender. Lots of season left to go, but it looks like we have all the necessary pieces. Obviously, we need to avoid critical injuries, but that is true of all teams.

I don't feel like we have ever had the quality players, 1 through 8 (or maybe 9), that this team has.

No harm, no foul, but I hope this same “love” is given to this team after our first loss… I personally think this year team is better for many of the same reasons… and even if they have a “not so good” night, I still think this year team is better!!

Who have we played so far? I think we can make that determination after the FL and UK games.

I don't think we can make the determination until much later than that. My thread title should have been "could they be better?", and one or two games won't answer that question because this is definitely a group that is growing with every game.

They're going to have a few of those in a league this stacked. The thing to watch is how they bounce back, and the thing I love about this group so far is how relentless they are on the glass on both ends and how they aren't completely dependent on any one player for their offense.

The scheme that Barnes & Co. have come up with this season is so much more dynamic than previous years with their emphasis on post-ups. I think that Knecht changed Barnes' thinking regarding offense to a more modern movement system utilizing multiple actions and a ton of ball screens. They can get offense from so many different places now, and having a go-to stud like Lanier only makes it better.

Replacing JJJ with Igor at the four is a major upgrade. Chaz has took on Knecht's role well. Everybody else has had a year of improvement to offset other players lost from last season. Our center duo on paper would be a downgrade but I think they have held their own and been on par.
