I agree. I’d love Griffin and would be fine with Hamer too.Mark Griffin? I think he lives near Nashville though.
Bradshaw is too big time at ESPN/SECNW to do the color for UT basketball broadcasts.
I’d guess a former player, but they probably need to live in Knoxville since it’s part time work.
A younger type guy on local radio would be another possibility.
My preference is for Bert to stay on for a couple of years. But if I was betting I’d put my money(!) on Hamer.
Way back in the day, I believe that AW Davis did the color for John Ward for a couple of years. Now Bert and Stevie. So traditionally former Vols have been on mic #2. But over the last 20-30 years I can’t think of too many former players with (1) the skill set, (2) that aren’t still making money in a league (Grant), (3) are doing bigger things (Slay, Bradshaw), and (4) live close by.
Bruce Pearl would have been a good fit if his post UT coaching career had failed.
Heh, I kind of laughed a little reading this. I agree Bruce could be a great fit if he was willing to just be the color guy, but I also sort of think Bruce's ego is a wee bit too big to just be the color guy. Too much of a showman - which is a good thing for his current job - but I feel like he'd get irritated at having to, ah, "control" his excitement.
I don't like that hear Hamer...I know VFLI might be in the minority but I’m not crazy about Steve Hamer. I think he does a fine job calling the smaller games on ESPN for us in the early part of the season, but I wouldn’t want him as a full-time basketball commentator.
I’m not sure who I’d call. Bradshaw isn’t leaving the SEC Network so he’s probably a pipe dream.
He loves Knoxville and rubbing elbows with the local elite is what made me think of him. But he probably wants to be the next Dick Vitale. And since he’s getting it done at Barn, he’s off the serious candidate list.
If Devoe wasn’t in his 80s he’d be a possibility. Haven’t seen him around for a few years. I hope he’s okay.
Keith going solo is a decent probability, by I think he likes taking a team approach. Even going back to his Sports Talk days at WIVK 30+ years ago. Who was his sidekick? Cody Allison?
It hasn’t been lucrative at all. It’s been more of a VFL thing. The free trips to holiday tournaments are probably the best perk. Of course Keith/Danny White might take a different approach.
Oh man, scratching too far back for me to remember with that question. I think Allison worked on the show but I don't believe he was a regular host. But also, I don't remember much so entirely likely I'm wrong.
