Josh Pate on Josh Heupel

I couldn’t agree with Josh anymore. CJH has brought us back to relevance. We all need to remember the bad years, then look at the last 4 years as a gift. CJH will get it done. Building a program takes time. Go Vols!!
As I stated in another thread, other than CJH's '22 team, the last Volunteer team to finish in the Top Ten with 10 or more wins was 2001...almost 25 years ago !!!

It took Dabo 7 full seasons to really breakthrough. And he didn’t have an AP top 10 finish until his 5th full season. Years 7-12 he had the second best program behind Alabama but went toe to toe with them and won 2 out of 4 championship appearances in that time period. Not saying we will win a championship in the next few years but things are trending towards that direction if we allow Heupel to run his operation.

Portal can also make it more difficult as we’ve seen this offseason. Have to re-recruit your own players every season and the money you were planning on using for incoming players has to be used to retain the players you currently have on the roster so they don’t jump ship and leave you completely decimated.

You beat me to it. 😊

I felt Tennessee was facing a 4-5 year rebuilding project with major NCAA penalties when Heupel was hired. We’d had 3 winning seasons in the 7 previous years WITHOUT NCAA PROBATION. I expected 2 or 3 years with no bowls due to poor record/punishment. We avoided all of that & should be damn appreciative of the job he has done.

By the same token, the portal makes it more difficult in that you have to re-recruit your own team every year just to keep key players from leaving.

Yeah. I think people are mislabeling the portal as good or bad for programs. I would argue your program's position informs your perspective on the portal. And the word I would use is destabilizing. Wherever your program is, be it good or bad, the portal can quickly and forcefully change your circumstances. That's great if you're an average team trying to improve, but it's not great if you're already a great team trying to maintain your status. If you have valuable assets, people will come for them. Churn will increase, and programs will experience wider oscillations between being good and bad, and and the stability of everything will decline.

And's let not even start on there potentially being no limits to transfer timing. That just magnifies the impact the portal is already having, tenfold.

The only way a program will avoid the negative elements is to pay, and pay handsomly. The ones who can afford to not experience the negative elements will pay for their stability. And the more important the stability is, the higher the premiums will go, too.

Oh I agree. Schools will have to pay big to stay relevant. The question I have is if UT has the money backing to keep up with what the deep pockets schools are going to spend. It’s going to be tough to compete with schools that eventually will have $40 to $50 million budgets.

I agree Heupel has shown to be a builder of teams at Tenn. The question is (and I’m willing to wait and see)whether he can take the next step and turn that good team into a very, very good team. Going from crappy to good is the easier part. Teams make big steps at first. But continued elevating is now done in smaller steps. Upgrading coaches and particular positions are part of that growth. Based on 4 years, I definitely do not think we have the best assistant coaches for where the program now stands and there are a few position groups that need upgrades. The question is whether CJH is willing to upgrade coaches and have the skill to balance the roster to upgrade positions without spending all his money to just stay the status quo.
