Tennessee fans know both Joe Milton and Hendon Hooker, who was drafted by the Lions. When both were on our team, Milton was the starter until he was injured. Then Hooker got his opportunity and led the offense with crowd pleasing performances. He moved chains, lit up scoreboards, and turned our offense into one of the best in the nation, leading the team with personal discipline and dedication. Then Hooker graduated, and Milton started the next season. I thought that Joe played well, but who did not notice the drop in performance from Hendon Hooker? Now Joe Milton is the player getting buzz after a very good game quarterbacking the Patriots, and there is talk of the Lions trading for Milton. Will the Lions have both Hooker AND Milton on the team, like we did?

There is no talk from any media source or the Lions that they are interested in Milton.

From the linked article, "Alameda’s piece for Wright Sports on Sunday was titled 'The Detroit Lions Will Replace Jared Goff with Joe Milton.'”

Goff just signed a VERY lucrative contract extension with significant guaranteed money.

Lions are basically stuck with him for at least another couple of years.

Hooker is obviously not going anywhere in Detroit. Them bringing Teddy Bridgewater out of retirement and elevating him to #2 basically ended Hendons career there. Wish the Lions would just trade him to somewhere where he could at least get a shot

IF (big if) the Lions cared enough to trade for Milton then Hooker would be either traded for whatever the Lions could get for him or cut after training camp.

What an idiot!! There is no way in hell Detroit is thinking of dumping Goff. He had a very bad game but most of the year was putting up MVP like numbers. But even if they were, no one, NO ONE is putting their eggs all in a Joe Milton basket because he looked decent in one game against backups. He does realize that all of Milton's college starts are on film doesn't he? I like Milton and think there is a chance that he becomes a starter one day but seriously?

There's no talk about trading for Milton. Goff just got a big a$$ contract. Detroit is NOT trading for another back up Milton had a good game against Buffalo, who had there scrubs in and resting their starters.

Detroit loves Goff. They aren't going to trade him unless the defense gets healthy and they still don't sniff the super bowl.

There are enough teams in search of a QB that after the draft IF the Lions are listening there could be a market for Hooker. The problem is he has to play to build real value. I don't think anyone would look to trade for him as a starter because the have no tape on him. because of that the offers they would get for him wouldn't be worth it. Goff has stayed too healthy for Hooker to get his chance (539 of 551 pass attempts were Goff). Maybe Ben Johnson would be interested in him at a higher value than most but the Bears are fine with their QB situation. why would the Lions trade their 3rd round backup on a rookie contract for probably at most a 5th or 6th rounder?

It would be kind of hilarious if the Detroit Lions blew up the best team they ever had because they thought Joe Milton looked good in garbage time. But the guy proposing this idea doesn’t know his ass from a hole in the ground.

Re:why would a team take a guy who they drafted in the 3rd for a 5th or 6th? (Believe Hooker went in the 4th BTW?)

That's just the way the league works now man. Teams draft a mid round guy and kind of try to make him a backup they have control over for 3-4 years. When his rookie contract is up or almost up, trade them on for whatever you can get for them and draft another one. Wash, rinse, and repeat.

Occasionally, those the starter gets hurt and some of those guys get a shot somewhere along the line.

Good examples of this at least in the last season would be the DeVito kid with the Giants or Spencer Rattler with the Saints

The fact that the Lions brought Bridgewater out of retirement for the playoffs is a pretty clear indication they have no confidence in or plan for Hooker.

A few things here:
1) Lions brought up Bridgewater for the payoffs because they knew Hooker has some kind of injury.
2) Lions are not going to cut Hooker, even if they keep Bridgewater, because he can learn the game so fast that it makes him an ideal scout team QB from week to week
3) Pats will not move off Milton now that they have McDaniels back at OC - CJM will see the weapon he has in Joe, even if it's situational

Hooker was round 3 pick 68

I understand trade values. I was saying for the lions why would they make the move? Hooker to them is a good investment. He is on a rookie contract, so cheap. they are not likely to find a QB of his level past day 1 or early day 2. My point is the most they would likely get is that and that would be generous. Starting QB's go for about a 3rd round pick. NFL trades are nothing like NBA trades. People getting traded for first round picks is rare and it only really applies to other draft picks or 'superstar' QB's and 9/10 any trade in the NFL that involved first-round or even second picks ends up bad for the team that gave up the picks.

Bringing in Bridgewater does not mean they have no plans or faith on Hooker its common freaking sense. Hooker has 9 career pass attempts. 0 actual meaningful game action. But again, he is on a rookie contract. They did not sign Bridgewater to a long-term contract its literally ove
Bridgewater to a long-term contract he got a 1-year contract its basically already over since they are not in playoffs anymore.

As far as its how the league goes.. that is incorrect... most QB's after their rookie contract is up become free agents or sign with their original team. It is very rare they get traded unless they have played and have gained value.

So in this case 1 year means 1 month, not until December 2025?

Totally agree. The Lions and Pats both like Hooker and Milton respectively. If the Lions were not ok with Hooker they would have went for a QB way before the playoffs and cut Fromm or Hendon. The fact that Milton got a start and didn't crap the bed actually gives him (slightly) more trade value than Hooker. Also, no injury history helps. Hendon is the better QB period but trust me watching them in practice Milton is gonna have someone having dreams of world domination because if he ever puts it all together he will be a monster, you can't teach that arm and that size.

I agree that even if they keep Bridgewater they won't cut Hooker they'd cut Fromm. But I don't think they keep Bridgewater unless its to mentor Hooker. Goff is still la young buck on a big contract he ain't likely doing much mentoring. Its kinda wild that Goff has 7 more years of experience in the league but is only 3 years older than Hendon. He's (Hooker) actually a year older than Fromm also.

Dude. Bridgewater isn’t the #2 going forward.

Doesn't matter. The fact that the Lions felt the need to go and sign him off the street doesn't look good for Hendon They trusted someone else who hasn't seen a practice snap all season over him possibly having to play. I'm sorry, but there is no way you can say that is a good look.

Remember that teams have to decide after the third season whether or not to extend the contract. You really think the Lions are gonna extend him at much bigger $$ after this season which is pretty much the decision they have to make.

Sorry man, those are my thoughts on the issue and I'm pretty set in them lol. It sucks for Hendon honestly. He will not be the first person to have his career hurt by being drafted to the wrong place and he will certainly not be the last.

Dude, that's a reach....Bridgewater was the Lions backup in 23. Every team in the league would rather a journeyman QB familiar with their system make an emergency start in the playoffs than a QB making his 1st career start.

Only one QB in the Super Bowl era has made his 1st career start in a playoff game.

Dan Campbell is a pretty straight shooter. Everything he said at the time of the Bridgewater signing said it wasn't indicative of Hooker.

1st - the new OC may like more mobile QBs even though JG remains as the starter. In fact, that is what I hope happens this next year… we start to see more playing time for Hendon so that by the end of year they can trade JG for a defensive starter and/or draft picks. 🤞.

2nd - I don’t think the team can do anything regarding his contract. He just has to make the team. Rookie contracts can’t change until after 3 full years. Of course they could trade him.

Probably wrong on all fronts. Who knows.
