It’s a three-year extension for Banks that runs through the 2027 season, and it includes a raise to his salary, which will increase from $1.5 million the past two years to $2.15 million, making him one of the highest-paid defensive coordinators in college football.
The amendment also adjusts Banks’s incentive structure, adding a bonus worth 14% of his salary – capped at $500,000 as Tennessee has in all of its assistant coaching contracts – if the Vols make the CFP quarterfinals. The existing bonuses for making a bowl game (8.33%), making the CFP (12%) and making the CFP semifinals (16%) remain. Additional incentives for appearing in or winning the SEC Championship Game and appearing in or winning the CFP National Championship stayed the same.
Per USA Today, Banks’s raise to $2.15 million will make him one of the highest-paid assistant coaches in college football. Only three made more in 2024: LSU defensive coordinator Blake Baker ($2.5 million), Michigan defensive coordinator Wink Martindale ($2.3 million) and Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles ($2.2 million). Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding made $2.15 million in 2024 as well.

I hope our defense can have another solid year and keep improving, since they are maintaining continuity. Now that that’s out of the way, I’ll be interested to see what happens with the other remaining unsigned coaches since it seems like they usually announce coaching news close together.

Worth every penny. Our D has improved every year he's been here and we were elite this season. Hell our Defense is the main reason we made the playoff.

Danny White keeps proving he's the best AD in college athletics
Ask Ohio State and Georgia if they think we are elite on defense. I doubt they would agree

Did you see what OSU just did? They went to another level after that Michigan loss and UGA simply played their best game against us. Our D kept 11 out of 13 opposing Offenses under 20 points. That's the definition of Elite in this age of CFB

How many good offenses did we play of those 11? Zero.

Extend OK. But make him the highest paid DC in the Country? Nobody was seriously going after him. How many believe that Banks is the best in CFB? Knowles? (Being heavily Pursued by PSU) Al Golden? (Just hired by the Bengals) When a team makes no adjustments from half to half, somebody didn't get it done. When a team makes no improvement after a bye week, somebody didn't get it done. Hope I'm wrong... And don't forget, this IS America and opinions are allowed....

Like you just said Golden went to the NFL and Miami and Clemson sure as hell wanted Banks. What other college DCs do you believe our head and shoulders better than Banks?

We are overpaying him but I am not upset about it. That is a salary for an elite DC, he is a good DC but not elite. An elite DC would have prepaired and called better games against UGA and OSU. To sum up, I am happy he is staying and fine with him being overpaid.

I think with banks in place, the resigning of remaining coaches falls into place. Without him signed, signing defensive assistants made no sense because if he left, they might not have wanted to be here anyway.

He is absolutely an elite DC. Against UGA and OSU we were out talented. Would you consider OSU to have an elite defense? They crapped the bed against a bad Michigan and had a bad game against Oregon.

What about TX? They have an elite DC? They crapped the bed twice against UGA twice and got schooled by OSU. Banks is one of the main reasons we won 10 games and made the playoffs. He has earned his money.

Love Garner. Like Ekeler. OK with Inge. Martinez... not a fan. Secondary improved this year, but his track record isn't good enough.

That is the most ridiculous statement possible. Thats like saying you sold less records than Drake or Kenny Chesney so you suck. We went platinum, dude. How we did against easily 2 of the best teams in the country 2 of 133 is not a a measure of how good or bad we were. If you want to really get at it. Neither of those teams had their best game against us. OSU put up points against EVERYONE they played except for Michigan. 42-17 is really bad and looks really bad until you put it in context.

They scored 41 against Oregon and even in their loss to them scored 31. Like it or not OSU was a juggernaut this year. That roster is nuts Do they even have a single position without a future NFLer at other than TE?

UGA vs UT is a headcase game. Much like Bama/Auburn. OSU/MIchigan. Bama/LSU, UT/Bama, Oregon/Oregon State, Florida/Georgia, UCLA/USC, FLirida schools vs each other and Army Navy. The winner of these games is not always the best team on the field because the game is about a lot more. Florida State got stomped by Miami and Florida, but given the QB they threw out there those 2 games it should have been a lot worse. As a fan, it's hard to do, but you have to realize some games are gonna be aberrations. I will give a perfect example and get a lot of hate for it. But put a different Jersey on Bama in 2022 and 2024 let them be say Lousiville with the same roster and coaches and we lose both those games. Those UT teams went on that field with copious amounts of real animosity. Those crowds had a different kind of energy.

The OSU playoff game at their house? Trust me, the failed takeover played a bigger part in the score than the talent on the teams. Motivation plays a big factor. Our team, rightfully, was happier to be in the playoffs than most fans might expect. They walked into the shoe not knowing what to expect. They are used to playing in front of big crowds, but that crowd was something else.. they were pissed. That OSU team didn't go into the season hoping for a natty. It was their reason for existence. As a fan you can say UT should have been the same way but if they were, it would have been based on delusion. Player for player name a stronger roster in college football in 2024? The only team that would come close would be.. oh damn UGA. Ohio State has been in legit playoff contention for the last 2 decades. We are just getting back there. Like it or not its true.
