Vols2015 73 80

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- No. 17/17 Tennessee (15-4, 3-4 SEC) and No. 2/2 South Carolina (19-1, 6-1 SEC) face off on Monday night at Food City Center. The Lady Vols and Gamecocks will meet in a contest televised by ESPN2.

UT will be facing its second straight top-10 opponent and is in the midst of a run in which it faces four top-10 foes in a five-game stretch. The Big Orange will face No. 2/2 South Carolina on Monday and travel to Missouri on Feb. 2 before hosting No. 6/6 UConn on Feb. 6 and playing at No. 5/4 LSU on Feb. 9.

  • DEPENDABLE RUBY: Ruby Whitehorn is UT's second-leading scorer at 13.5 ppg., tallying 10+ points in 12 of her past 13 games, including a season-high 21 vs. Texas.
  • ZEE STEPPING IT UP: Zee Spearman has scored 10+ 11 times, averaging 11.1 ppg. after tallying 14 (5-of-8 shooting) at Texas.
  • TURNING OVER THE OPPOSITION: UT is No. 7 in turnovers forced per game (24.58) and No. 4 in T.O. margin (10.42). Miss. State had 20 miscues on Jan. 16 for the 13th 20+ T.O. game (7 were 30+) by a foe in 2024-25.
  • RACKING UP STEALS: UT is No. 9 nationally in steals per game (13.1). It now has 12 games of 10+ steals and 249 total in 19 games. It had 159 in 33 games a year ago.
  • THAT'S A 10-COUNT: Tennessee has prevented its foes from getting the ball over halfcourt in 10 seconds a total of 17 times in 19 games. UT forced only five violations the previous five years combined.
  • UT NO. 13 IN NET RANKINGS: With four losses by a grand total of eight points to NET No. 3 Texas, No. 9 LSU, No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 21 Vanderbilt, and quality wins over No. 26 Florida State, No. 30 Richmond, No. 32 Mississippi State, No. 34 Iowa and No. 58 Middle Tennessee, Tennessee is ranked No. 13 in the NCAA's NET rankings.
  • 100 DIMES x 3 FOR SAM: Samara Spencer has dished 100+ assists (105) for the third straight season after putting up 154 in 2022-23 and 115 in 2023-24 at Arkansas.
  • WHITEHORN NEARING 1K: Ruby Whitehorn has tallied 257 points in 2024-25 (13.5 ppg.) to hit 968 for her career, leaving her 32 away from reaching 1,000.
  • CHASING 2,000/500 STAT LINE: Jewel Spear now has 2,034 points and 492 rebounds, needing eight rebounds to have a 2000/500+ stat line for her career.
  • UNCOMMON 1,500/500/500 IN SIGHT: Samara Spencer has 1,583 pts., 479 rebs. and 470 assts., nearing a 1,500/500/500 career stat line. Only five SEC women's players have done that since 1991-92.
  • LAST BIG ONE: A 75-67 win over #2/3 S.C. on 2/18/21 was UT's last home top-five win.
BABY CALDWELL ARRIVES
  • An hour prior to the Lady Vols' game at Texas on Jan. 23, it was announced publicly that Kim Caldwell and husband Justin, who is player development coordinator for the Tennessee men's basketball team, had welcomed a new son into the world. Conor Scott Caldwell is the first child for the couple.
  • Scott is the first name of Kim Caldwell's father, the late Scott Stephens, who coached her in high school and served as an assistant coach for four seasons (2016-20) when she was head coach at Glenville State before he passed away on Nov. 21, 2020.
3x100 FOR SAM: Samara Spencer surpassed 100 assists in a season for the third consecutive year, carding six against Texas on Thursday night to run her total to 105 in 19 games. Spencer spent the previous three seasons at Arkansas and dished out 154 in 2022-23 and 115 in 2023-24. She now has 470 for her career.
DOUBLE-DIGIT RUBY: Ruby Whitehorn recorded her 16th game in double figures as a junior, firing in a season-high 21 points against Texas. The Detroit, Michigan, native netted a season-high eight field goals and tied her season best of four free throws. Whitehorn posted an 11-game streak of hitting 10 or more points, ranging from the Iowa contest on Dec. 7 to Mississippi State on Jan. 16. The junior has cracked 20 points twice this season, including two of the past three games, and carded one double-double thus far.

UT/USC SERIES NOTES
  • Tennessee leads the all-time series, 51-16, but South Carolina has won the last seven meetings and 10 of the past 11 matchups.
A LOOK AT SOUTH CAROLINA
  • With eight McDonald's All-Americans on its roster, South Carolina has great depth and is first nationally in bench points per game at 42.2 per contest.
  • The Gamecocks score 81.9 ppg. and allow only 55.1, with a scoring margin of 26.8 that ranks No. 7.
  • The trio of Joyce Edwards (12.2), MiLaysia Fulwiley (11.1) and Te-Hina Paopao (10.9) are the top scorers in a balanced attack.
  • USC shoots 46.8 on FGs and 76.3 on FTs.
THE GAMECOCKS' LAST GAME
  • Joyce Edwards scored 14 points and Sania Feagin added 12 points and seven rebounds, and No. 2 South Carolina beat fifth-ranked LSU, 66-56, on Friday night to end the Tigers' undefeated season.
  • The Gamecocks held the Tigers to just eight points in the second quarter, their lowest-scoring frame of the season, limiting them to a season-low total (56 points).
  • South Carolina's defense was strong, recording a team total of 13 steals for the fourth game this season and notching a season-high 11 blocked shots.
  • South Carolina has won 69 straight at home and 54 in a row in SEC regular-season games.
UP NEXT
  • Tennessee is idle on Thursday before heading to Columbia, Mo., to face off vs. Missouri on Sunday afternoon at Mizzou Arena.
  • The Lady Vols and Tigers will meet at 2 p.m. CT (3 p.m. ET) in a contest streamed on SECN+.

Depending on whether the Lady Vols are hitting shots Monday or not, we have equal shots at losing by a lot or winning by a little so, once again, I'm not going to pick a winner or a score.

But I will say this. While we had such a completely different team last season, that team which floundered a large portion of it turned out to be the ONLY team to have given South Carolina a genuine scare. That much-maligned team had the eventual national champs dead to rights with 1.1 seconds to go.

I bring this up to make the point that you never know about sports. If last year's squad could get that close, I feel like with a healthy shot percentage and a lot of luck, who knows? Maybe THIS time Tennessee will get it right, even if it comes down to the wire again.

100% voting for LV so far. Hmmmmm

Are we a NegaVol if we don't pick LV to beat 2nd best team in country?
Not at all! Some people, like me, simply cannot bring themselves to write dwn a score that doesn't give Tennessee more points. 😅 I think it probably just feels better to most fans to be optimistic about the upcoming game. Not everyone needs that type of self-soothing. Fans aren't required to be realistic -- just passionate!

South carolina is good no doubt im not a fan of there starting lineup so while that group is in i believe we can def compete its when fulwiley, edwards and tessa come in and staying even on the boards(knock on wood)

Yep when they bring their starters off the bench it definitely gets tougher.

The set up is perfect for us - an extra day of rest and what could be a trap game for SC coming off the biggie.

We'll have to shoot at least as well as we did at Texas and I'm not sure we're capable of that two games in a row against a superior D.

We kept it very close all 3 times against them last year, expect we'll at least keep it close. Upset not likely, but def possible.

You could count the hurried and bad shots we take and come up with 10 possessions or more in everygame we've lost that we could've handled better. We'll have to handle them all well in this game or we won't be in it.

I’m seeing some usual chatting on the game thread, one thing for certain the LVs will compete with any team on the road or home.
The key to beating South Carolina for the Lady Vols being coached by arguably the best assistant (interim) head coach in the country Jenna Burdette is playing 9 players. The LVs have as deep a team as any team in WBB.
With that being said, Ruby and Talaysia need to see 30+ minutes in this upcoming stretch. Alyssa need to see 20+ minutes.
I maintain that the early season setbacks due to injury with Samara Spencer and Jewel Spear have hindered them to some extent.
Kaniya Boyd is a player that I would like to see play some additional minutes when we have other guards struggling defensively.
I believe people will disagree on who is the odd player out of the 10 starters rotation if they went to 9 players but it’s the best formula to winning/closing these games against Top 10 teams.

I love the LV's but just don't see beating S.C. or LSU this season.

I see a VG chance of an upset
SC hasn't faced this style of play
barely got a win from LSu,,,scored low
our near upset of them last year

All good pre-cursors for an upset

OK guys, this thread needs a little controversy to get you guys talking some smack.....

This girl, Chole Kitts, appears to be their weak link......In the LSU game and other games I have peeked in on, this girl was not very fast, nor much of a ball handler....She can shoot some, but she is not much of a play maker...Keep her out of the paint and she is not real effective.

Our defensive weakness is Puckett...I hope the coaching staff does not put Puckett on Chole, but they probably will...Unfortunately, Puckett has to guard someone...She spends most of her game time in the trailing position as her defensive assignment just blows by her.

Let me add, I'm sure both of these young ladies are wonderful human beings, but Jake, this is college basketball .....

I was so happy that LSU did not pull an upset. I think a loss would have assured a tough night for the LVs.

It will come down to the shooting because made shots let our defense get set versus being caught in transition.

If the team at least falls between the red hotness of the Texas game and the brick layers special of Vandy, they can keep it close.

We need to Coop to come out with fire!!!

Maybe after all these heartbreakers, fate will break our way.

The LVs really need this victory to get back in the top 4 seed race.

Ruby Whitehorn is the x-factor. Just like Texas didn’t have anyone that could guard Ruby this South Carolina team won’t have anyone that can guard her.
It’ll take a Bre Beal type of defender to contain Whitehorn at the guard/wing position.
When Coop and Whitehorn start playing 30mins a game this team is going to close out games with a W.
All eyes are on Coach Caldwell and Tennessee. Never seen this before in the lady’s game for a 1st year coach on ESPN the game announcers talked for about a minute or so during the Kentucky vs Vanderbilt men’s game about the Lady Vols being essentially 4 last second possessions and 8 points away from an undefeated record.
Imagine that in year 1!
Still a lot of basketball left to be played.
GBO ‘solid’’!
