Penny ranked ahead of Barnes

I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt naming all these young coaches, first season coaches and up and comers. But when I saw Penny and Izzo ahead of Barnes I couldn’t remaining silent. And to top it off you have Golden up there who should be on administrative leave along with his assistant coach until investigation is finished. Don’t get me wrong, the dude is a good coach as it relates to on the court leadership and coaching but off the court is a whole different matter. I’m really surprised more attention hasn’t been brought to the matter.

Same here...real hush hush. If it was us it would be on the bottom line 24/7.

Penny has done a really good job this season. Memphis had the toughest out of conference slate of anyone in the country. Only one scholarship player returned for this season. Memphis has beaten UCONN, Michigan St, Ole Miss, Mizzou, @Clemson, @Virginia, and @San Francisco. It's not crazy to say that he and Barnes BOTH deserve to be on the list. But to say that Penny has done a better job than Barnes this season isn't crazy

All very good points VT. Thanks for pointing that out. Maybe it’s my past issues with Penny. lol. GBO!

the article says if it would have been published a few weeks ago that Barnes would have been first on this list. just a timing issue-- give it until the end of the season
The fact that it says that though really means the list is volatile. I have a hard time believing that a coach falls from possibly 1 to 14 because his undefeated team lost 2 games on the road (at the time). That means your list is all over the place.

What a clown. Anyone who thinks Penny is better at any point doesn’t deserve any credit.
There is no universe in which Penny Hardaway is even a top 75 college basketball coach, let alone higher than Rick Barnes. If Penny Hardaway's name was anything other than Penny Hardaway, he would have been fired several years ago.

And this is why our fan base might be perceived as the dumbest in the nation. This is not a ranking of who is the best coach but a ranking of potential coach of the year. Coach of the year is almost always about who has exceeded expectations. Absolutely Penny should be on that list.

Well, to be fair, he was hired because of his name. That program was in a bad spot. He took lower pay for a few years to help them.

Penny was born and raised in Memphis and has always been a staunch supporter of the Tigers and the Memphis community. He has had some really good players during his tenure there but his ability to coach them up has been suspect and they have often failed to meld and meet expectations. Teamwork and taking care of the ball hasn't been a point of focus for them. If it were, they would have a top team this year.

I know this board loves to get up in arms at perceived slights against Tennessee, but Coach of the Year awards usually go to either a coach who had a truly dominant season or a coach who greatly exceeded expectations. Rick has built the program to the point that merely being a top 10 team does not exceed expectations by much, if at all. This is not a list of the best coaches in the country, otherwise Bill Self, Dan Hurley, etc would be on it. So don’t go crying about how ESPN hates us.

Yea, I was raised in Shelby County. I know that. Regardless of how you feel about his coaching though (I don't think he's a great floor coach either), they are much better than when Tubby Smith was there. He didn't have to take the job. He's financially set. He is the only thing really moving that program along in that conference. His name attracts players. Being a great coach and being relevant for the program aren't mutually exclusive.

I hope to see his coaching acumen improve but he's been in the position for several years and I'm not seeing it yet. I just wonder how many great players become great coaches. When the game comes to you naturally, how does that translate to being able to teach others.
