to make a long story short, Ohio State operated at a 38 million dollar deficit during the 2024 fiscal year. i'm all about spending money to make my team better, but 38 million in the hole is on another level

I'm not surprised. OSU has 33 Varsity level teams in their athletic department. Tennessee only has 20.

38 million in college atheletics ain't ****. To you it's a huge number but it's just a budget for them.
I think you missed the point. It's not the size of the number, it's the negative sign in front of it.

Sure, $38M is only a percentage (probably in the neighborhood of 15%) of a program's annual budget. But it is unsustainable to bleed that away, year after year. Can't just keep operating at a loss without something eventually having to give.

Now, no one is saying this is a sustained problem. It is thus far a single data point. But it _is_ pointing in the wrong direction.

So it is noteworthy.

Go Vols!

In comparison, UT's brought in a reported $2.2M more than they spent, with a reported revenue of $234M and spending of $231.8M.

There is a little more to this.

Six home games is very abnormal for Ohio State. 8 is usual, and this year they will have a surplus off the 8.

Bowl revenue isn't added into this at all, and even tho the big ten splits all of it evenly, they will make a nice dime off it cuz Penn State and Oregon also played into the final 8.

As far as the travel, most of their other sports are very regional in the traveling. They don't go coast to coast at all in most of the 33

And now they are paying for travel from New Jersey and Maryland to Los Angeles and Oregon for those 33 teams.
Yeah I think ultimately, for B level sports, this is going to be a challenge. You wonder if they don't ultimately set up "other sports", outside of football, basketball, and maybe baseball, to have regional conferences. To your point, taking a large swim team on a swing out west will chew up alot of unnecessary funds...unless they just have a few large conference meets.

$255 million in and $293 million out.

Anybody know how that compare with other schools?

No, I didn't miss it. I just made a different point. Doesn't mean that yours isn't valid, but they account for it moving foward.

Well whatever they spent, they have something we haven’t had in 27 years. I’m beginning to wonder if I’ll ever see a natty in my lifetime and I’m in my early 50s.

If it meant a national championship in football, wouldn't you spend it?

I think we are closer than some want to think. Most knew this team this year was not built for a national championship. I realize that is not what you were saying, but you had to think it being in the playoffs, I know I did. I think we have the right guy for it, some staff adjustments and some big portal grabs/big time recruits and we get there.

Closer than we’ve been in years I’ll agree. When you look at game film breakdown on YouTube on some of the shots Nico missed by being young….alabama score should’ve been about 35-20. There was some others as well. I think Nico will be lights out this year if we can protect him.

Like I’ve said before: we don’t have to spend like Ohio State the win it all.

Because I don’t think what they did is sustainable

Actually, they have 36 varsity teams --- the most in the country, Their football is a $$ monster but look for them to start cutting a few of their other teams. All colleges rely on their football programs to support their other teams
