Got this stuck on my brain earlier and can't remember. Google gets me nowhere. It's driving me nuts.

After Fulmer took over as AD, within a few days he had whittled the choice down to 3 people

Pruitt
Mel Tucker
?

Who was the third one?

Wasn't it Kevin Steele?

I will accept that. Believe Steele would have been at Auburn at the time and they were probably coming off a good season.

I suppose I was thinking Steele was involved in the 20-21 coaching search which he was and didn't grasp that he might have also been considered in 17.

Just further confirmation that the 2017 search was doomed from the start.

that tells us all we need to know that those were our three choices.
That’s easy to say now but back then you have to think about it. We were a dumpster fire. Just went 0-8 in the SEC. And honestly, hiring Pruitt wasn’t a terrible choice at the time. The thought was maybe he would be like Kirby Smart.

Yes the Pruitt hire ended up a disaster. But seriously at that point, how many head coaches would have wanted the job?

I remember Pruitt's introductory press conference being cringe. I thought we just hired Jethro Bodine.
It was a special kind of cringe. I don’t need a football coach to be eloquent, but if you’re paying a guy 7 figures and making him the face of the university, maybe pick somebody who can occasionally make a noun and a verb agree and not end every sentence with a’ight”.”

There is no doubt that this job was a complete dumpster fire and they really didn't have a lot of options for the HC position. I think most of us wanted whoever they hired to be successful and to some degree supported whoever it was of those three. None of us really expected the onslaught of divisiveness within the program, especially between the staff. I did think the defense would work under pruitt because of his track record of putting up good D's, but never expected the offense to suck so bad under Cheney. I don't think any of us expected JG to be a baller but also didn't expect him to essentially regress his last couple seasons either. The fact that they continued to ride him even though he was mistake prone was very telling about their faith in the roster.

Talk about a perfect storm of poop.

Steele would have been a better hire the Pruitt... granted, I am saying that in hind sight.

I remember being underwhelmed by the hire but I gave Fulmer a benefit of the doubt. Pruitt made comments about needing to improve play in the trenches and I liked his comments to start off with. Boy was it all fool's gold.

This is my favorite . Just the facial expression of “what’s that?”

He couldn't get along with freaking Mark Richt, maybe the most laid back "successful" P5 coach of the last 25 years and who had undying loyalty to his assistants to the point it cost him his job. That should have been the biggest red flag.
