I don’t know quite what to make of it. My immediate reaction is this is just a “give him one more year to see if there’s improvement“ versus it being retention due to confidence in the SC’s leadership and results.

Thoughts?

Relax, he's the only strength coach that Coach has ever had---anywhere.

Seems like our team stayed healthier last season than any other season in recent memory. Not sure what improvement looks like unless it would be judged on strength and agility numbers, body fat, etc.
My thinking exactly. Who was that S&C coach back when we had so many injuries the whole time he was here, if I remember correctly?

can’t remember his name but seems like he had a military background and prided himself on pushing the guys in cardio with less traditional exercises like running hills. I recall multiple achilles injuries

The players complained about Lawson after 2015 so Butch canned him with the guy the players wanted. 2016 Tennessee led the nation in starts missed due to injuries. He got demoted after 2016 and Butch brought in a guy that was fired by morbidly obese Mike McCarthy due to the shape his guys were in and Tennessee repeated as having most starts lost due to injury. Then Butch was fired...

Obviously this was a sign of then culture/lack of accountability under Butch...

I think we look underdeveloped athletically, particularly in the trenches. The difference in our players and Ohio State's players was striking. Now, much of that is due to the caliber of athletes OSU has recruited over the last several years. But our interior linemen looked "doughy" compared to theirs. Plus, and I know I will get a lot of push back over this, for as good a player James Pierce was for us, why did it seem like he never got bigger the whole time he was here? To me, even for an edge guy, I always thought he looked too skinny. I was certain that CJH would have him shredded by his junior season. But honestly, he looks more like a wide receiver than an edge rusher to me. I don't know, maybe I'm wrong but the "eye test" tells me otherwise.

Sounds to me like more edge rushers should be built like wide receivers.

Maybe they should. Like I said, maybe this is a non-issue. But it seems to me like Pierce never got bigger from the day he stepped on campus to his last game. That almost seems impossible if you are in a major college S&C program. Who knows? Maybe if Pierce had bulked up more and got bigger/stronger, he might have been able to be more effective in taking on all those double teams and wouldnt have been so "MIA" in so many games last season. And honestly, I thought our staff could've done a better job bulking Nico up for his first season as a starter.

We'll know more after this Spring and Summer.

Pretty sure that the vast majority of assistants are still on one year deals.

Whoever it is they got they're work cut out bc against top competition we get whooped in the trenches ... I mean, I know Ohio State was a really good team but the way they stood our d-line up (without 2 starters mind you !) showed me we need some work in the weight room ...GO VOLS !!

Talked about this on the show, granted these guys are in better shape than me but they looked Dad bodish on the OL

I read somewhere that OSU whole line were seniors and super seniors who stuck around to finish the job. They had the might and the will.

Our best LB and 3 best WRs all missed significant time. I'm sure there's more. That's just off the top of my head.

Seems like these coaches don't seem to place the same amount of emphasis on S&C as coaches in the past.
As others have stated, under Fulmer it was always a top priority. I even recall it being a big deal and highlighted under Dooley and Jones.
Doesn't seem to be an area of worry with heupel...I kind of wish it would be though.
