Haven't been on here in a while. Clearly UT has some depth issues. One that I can't figure out is Dubar. How can a player go from the best player on a team to damned near insignificant? I realize the SEC is much tougher, but the goals are the same height. He just looks like he could bring so much more to the table. Is this a defense thing? There are some really astute BB fans on this forum, so I am hoping for some thoughts. IMO, for the Vols to have a deep run, he has to be the player they recruited. Come in, make good shot selections & drain them.

Classic tweener for this level of basketball. Not quite big enough for the post and not quick enough or skilled enough for guard/wing play in the SEC. Probably was both of those things in lower level college basketball but neither of those things here. So you try to steal a few minutes here and there and catch a glimpse of his previous basketball life.

I almost kind of like the fact he's ready to try and score when he's in there. He certainly came up big in two big road wins, especially in Austin. He's got to show some consistency if he wants to play more. I think he would be a huge asset if he can ever get himself enough PT to get in the flow of an entire game

A swing and a miss - it happens. No coaches connect 100% on transfers or recruits.

Hopefully we didn’t waste too much NIL there.

The writing was on the wall when he was sitting out practices in the preseason for “personal reasons”

Classic tweener/Too slow: Why wouldn't Coach Barnes have known that or did he & just hope for the best?
Bernard King: I agree as well. If he's coming into the game, it's either to give someone a breather or throw a few down. He's damned sure not in there for his D.
WalkenVol: I admit to having those thoughts, I just hoped I was wrong. I mean these are young kids, (at least they used to be). It took Igor some time to get his feet planted & I hoped Darlinstone would come on as well.

I thought the kid who left had a bright future. With all of the rules/lack of rules, was there no way to add another player? & on another note, where is he now?

If Barnes comes back next year. ( you just never know for sure ) He is going to have to rebuild this team. Most of them will be gone. Phillips and J.P. your bigs will be back.

He shot 40% from 3 the last 2 years at Hofstra. I’m guessing they were looking at him like Milicic in being a stretch 4. He hasn’t been good enough on defense or shooting the 3, so he’s not getting many minutes. There was also discussion about his height when he was recruited, but we had scholarships to give.

And what was the writing saying? He missed practice because he sucked? Afaik we still don't know what those reasons were, so that's not really fair. At least he didn't bail on the team like Carr.

Not enough minutes to develop/find a meaningful role in the offense, so when he gets in he is amped up and is too eager to contribute/ create that meaningful role.
This inevitably leads to a miss or two and the cycle repeats.
We had to play him more involved in the Texas game, and he stepped up and helped us get the win. Same in the Flordia game. Without his defense that game we don't win.
Barnes just has him on a short leash. Even if he makes a good play or even two in a row, if he follows it with even a single bad play he gets pulled. Sometimes he gets pulled after a good shot or two without a miss, never to return.
It is what it is.

Reading in-between the lines from the discussions last April when recruiting him, I think the fact the coaching staff didn’t offer him until they had discussions after his visit makes me think they were hesitant from the start on if he’d be a good pickup. Didn’t help that he measured a few inches shorter than listed at Hofstra.

Sounded like they took a gamble on him given where the roster was at the time.

His D has been good. He was a big reason Haugh went 1-6 and only had 6 points in that second Flordia game. Thomas Haugh is one of the better 4's in the league.
I've also seen Dubar guard other positions really well. Some nice steals and few good blocks.
He's had some good passes on offense, too.

I didn’t get the impression that the personal reasons were disciplinary in any way. Sounded to me more like he was taking care of family obligations and/or dealing a death or illness. I don’t know anything, but that was more of the vibe I got.

His defense is why he’s not getting minutes, he gets lost and blown by more than anyone else

To me, it said we threw NIL$ at someone who wasn’t ready to contribute to start the season which to me equals a swing and a miss. It’s like I’m fighting a war and the blackrock mercenaries I contracted to provide site security for the base don’t show up on the agreed to date. Doesn’t matter why, my contractors building the base don’t have security. Not understanding why this is confusing. These portal guys are mercenaries hired to play basketball. Show up and earn your money - no excuses.

So you think his personal reasons for being absent are that he just wasn't ready? If that was actually the case I doubt they would even offer him.

Hofstra to SEC is a big leap for a guy without a defined position who isn't a great defender and not very disciplined offensively.
