He will be missed and had been a great part of the broadcast

In HS I used to walk by his picture on the wall when headed into the locker room. He had a fun name for us to tell out

When did you graduate from Bearden?

Got to "meet" Bert long ago. I think it was his second year and my third year (1977) and we happened to have adjacent student tickets at a football game (don't remember which game). So sat next to him and probably irritated him with my constant commenting and questioning of the game. He was very kind and like the rest of us there, brought the necessary refreshments for the game. We both look a little different now.

I was a student on campus when Bertelkamp was a star on the basketball team. I happened to run into him at Ruby Tuesday's on Cumberland during a raucous happy hour and he was extremely gracious and we talked for a while and had a lot of fun. I will always fondly remember hanging out with him for a bit.

I went/graduated from Bearden as well. Bert was a senior and me a wee lad. Never really had much of a exchange with him except passing in the halls but seemed a great guy and I always rooted for him and at UT. True VFL.

He will be very missed.

My favorite ā€œBertism.ā€ He and Bob were calling a game at Mississippi State a number of years ago when he referred to a Bulldog player as a ā€œwalking turnover.ā€ That may have been a regular expression he used, but it was the first time I heard it and thought it was pretty funny. He will be very much missed.

Here's a 1977 photo of Bert with Coach Ray Mears.
