12-12 vs Kentucky

We are 12-12 against Kentucky in our last 24 games. Has anyone ever had that level of consistent success against Kentucky?

Nicely done, BasketVols. (Even if you are playing a second rate sport, I still respect the achievement.)

Go Big Orange!

Mears and DeVoe. The Stokely Curse.

A UT basketball coach going .500 for a career vs UK is like if a UK football coach went .500 against UT.

It doesn’t look like much but it’s a great accomplishment.

They have historically owned us
They have historically owned everyone. Tennessee has had much more success against them than any other school.

Did they make that happen? I was a wee child for Mears. All I really remember about those years is my parents getting a sitter from church to watch us while they went to the games. (Dad was a baller in his day, Mom was an Indiana girl, so basketball was a good thing for them.).

DeVoe? Well, I remember plenty, Ellis, White, heck, even Nix and Roth.. Even Defoe's cute little West High daughter, Donna (such a sweetheart.). But any single coach at 12-12? Dang. What Barnes has done here is pretty special for a sport that has, at times been, shall we say, unkind to Tennessee fans.

Ray Mears career record vs Kentucky was 15-15. Don Devoe had a good record against the cats, too -- 11-14.

No wonder they hate us.

I love it.

Edit: My uncle, a college basketball player, who as a coach is in the Indiana sports Hall of Fame, was a huge Kentucky fan. I wish he were alive today so I could call and talk trash.

I am gonna call his wife, my 96 year old Aunt, tomorrow, and give it to her.

Somewhere, I have a poster with the alternating signs reading "3" (point shot) and "10" for a dunkwhere we beat Kentucky 102-100? in 1990? . Good times.

Enjoy it *almost* as much as beating Bama in football.

Kentucky is a shade under or over .500 all time against bluebloods like UNC, Michigan State and Duke. So you could say we’re enjoying as much success right now as anyone has ever.

Nope. Our basketball program is much better than their football program. Sorry but it's not an appropriate analogy

Stokely was awesome. And when Smokey was orange.... magic.

The band actually wore their uniforms and marched into the gym. Circled the court a couple of times while playing.

There was also a Big Orange mascot for a couple of years. An actual orange costume that somebody wore.

There was a section for the Big Orange Tie Club (donors).

John Ward had to hike up to the last row in the section opposite the bench and take a catwalk out to the press row that was hanging from the rafters.

The center scoreboard was on a wench. Between games in the Volunteer Classic it was lowered to the court to change out the plexiglass team names.

The American flag would retract and was unrolled for the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.

Mears teams would go through their choreographed warm up routine while a recording of Sweet Georgia Brown played (the Harlem Globetrotters theme song). The unicyclist (Peltz and then Bill Seale) made a layup with an orange and white basketball for the finalé.

Most of the time the JV teams played first. I think that AW Davis coached the UT JV team. Varsity players sat behind the JV bench wearing orange blazers and watched the game. Then the JV did the same in the varsity game. Little kids (including me) got autographs from the players sitting and watching the other game.

The place would fill up with cigar and cigarette smoke.

The court surface was tartan. Rubber.

A guy worked a huge spotlight that was at the back of the balconies.

The side sections would retract for indoor track meets (I can’t believe that UT doesn’t have an indoor track facility anymore).

Haywood Harris was on the PA.
