I remember hearing about Barnes recruiting some no name from New York while we had the number one PG, Kennedy Chandler, in the class already. I thought we were stupid for recruiting him.

Undoubtedly, Chandler is more gifted, but ZZ has a grittiness and determination that make him a better college player!

I don't know what the future holds for him but I'm so thankful star ratings Don't tell me whole story. I was wrong about him then And he is undoubtedly on my Tennessee Mount Rushmore-really going to miss that kid.

They will teach college courses on how to play PG like ZZ
Man, no joke. It seems like once a game he makes a fool of the other team's best player. Him going at Broome while only being 5'9, was a statement. I would take a ZZ class on grittiness.

He could be a motivational speaker as well. He said he thought about giving up on basketball before Rick got him to come to Tennessee.

I became a UT fan in 1985. My favorite Vol of all time was Eric Berry. Wasn't on the greatest teams but still gave me plenty of reason to watch. I told my son that I might have a real reaction to ZZ being done here. I think he's my all time favorite across all sports. I really hope he gets to hoist that trophy. A final four at least!

My apologies - should have said he didn’t play in this current NIL era where they are offering enough $ to entice a player to return.

lol. There were no caps or limits when he played. There was nothing stopping Tennessee from offering him whatever they wanted to

Can you recall any player getting 7 figures back then? I don’t. The numbers have ramped up the last 2 years.

that still doesn’t change the fact that Tennessee could have offered any amount they wanted. This notion that Tennessee couldn’t be the first school to shatter some dollar amount ceiling to a player is absurd.

He’ll it didn’t even have to be the school or collective. Kennedy signed a card deal. Any amount of businesses could have struck deals with him.

How Chuck Webb isn’t your favorite is beyond me.

Wasn’t ZZ a 4-Star recruit?
Nope, he didn't even have scholarship offers when he graduated high school. His best offer overall was a walk on spot at Saint Francis. He almost gave up on basketball, but decided to play for his AAU team one last time. They played at the Peach Jam in Atlanta and that where Barnes saw him play and offered him a scholarship.

If Chandler had stayed, I am not at all convinced he would be as good as Z.
Defensively, maybe not. But offensively, I believe he would have been in the running for SEC player of the year and national player of the year. People discredit players because of the 1 and done guys before thinking the development they would have on campus. Barnes could have worked wonders with Chandler. JMO

3-Star, but I’m sure his height was a huge problem with all of the programs in college. Glad it wasn’t a problem for us. He’s a Vol legend.
